Saturday Snapshots — Munchies Edition

We’ve been eating a lot of tasty treats since I hid the scale. Funny how that works, eh? 🙂 Just kidding! I don’t even mean diving headfirst into the ice cream, I just mean I’ve been cooking again without weighing and measuring, and boy has my brain enjoyed it.

Here are some of the good eats you may have seen this week via Facebook, Twitter or Instagram (hollywouldifshecould):

Tuesday we did a little experiment in my house called “Will He Eat It: Salmon Edition.” You see, Garrett doesn’t really love cooked fish. He had a bad fish stick incident as a child and to this day cooked fish kind of skeeves him. But he loves sushi. So weird, right? So I’m always on the prowl trying to find cooked fish he will tolerate. Well guess what — he loves Salmon Burgers from Costco! Thanks for the suggestion, Internet. It was your brilliant minds that made me try them. I mixed up a mayo free version of this, plopped it on top and called it dinner.

Wednesday it was Sausage & Peppers!
photo
This is literally a 20 minute meal and I love to throw it together on nights that we go to the gym. We were supposed to have it for lunch on Wednesday, but I ended up skipping lunch that day and Garrett had to work, so we stole it for dinner instead of making a more Chicken Stir Fry. It’s just your fave sausage browned up nice and crispy, tossed with sauteed peppers and onions. Then cook up something green on the side (zucchini was our green of choice that night.) It comes together so quick it makes Rachael Ray’s head spin.

I worked out on Thursday morning at 5 am, took a quick shower and headed off to work only to realize I had forgotten my breakfast. Sad Friggin Panda, let me tell you. And then my phone buzzed and it was a text from my friend and workout buddy Cole who works in the building next door to mine:

And I came back to my desk with a couple of these babies and they were as good as they look!

photo

She doesn’t have a strict recipe, but lucky for you I know a gal who can hook you up with a good Paleo Blueberry Crumble Muffin Recipe.

Before I wrap this up, it’s Confession Time: I really need to stop buying string cheese because it is too damn easy going down. Hold me to it, would ya internet?

String Cheese: I wish I knew how to quit you....

It’s my favorite thing to have Post Workout — something about its saltiness is just PERFECT. Garrett’s favorite Post Workout Treat got a makeover this week too with the new Unsweetened Coconut Almond Milk I found at the grocery store.

photo

It was a nice switch up from just the Unsweetened Vanilla, and I highly recommend it! We’ve already purchased two more containers. That boy can really put down the protein shakes.

Anyway, that’s all the the fare I photographed this week. And wouldn’t you know it, now I’m hungry.

What’s In My…Shower?

photo

How about a little voyeurism to start your Friday off right…eh?

I’ve been spending a lot of time in my shower lately, partly because I’ve been a workout machine and partly because as the weather warms up Bathtub Season sort of comes to its natural end (weep!) so I thought I might show you the goods…uh, the goods that I use in my shower that is.

I personally have never met a medicine cabinet I didn’t want to snoop in, but maybe that’s just me. Don’t you think it’s fun to see Other People’s Products? Do you think that’s what Naughty By Nature was talking about when they recorded Down with OPP? (It’s possible, right?)
photo
This is where the magic happens, folks.

We found glass buy online so we redid our bathroom in 2007 — well actually we added this bathroom, more accurately, and the bathtub and shower combo is just my most favorite place. Well, until you have to squeegee it and clean it and all of that pain in the ass stuff that comes with glass shower doors! But I’ll tell you what, it sure is pretty to look at. 5 years later I’m still in love.

photo

We have a floor to ceiling shower caddy by Simple Human that holds all of our crap-ola, because a girl’s gotta have options, right? It’s one of the best investments ever, and the finite amount of space helps keep me in check. I am naturally the type of person who wants to have 900 bottles of shampoo on the floor of their shower. This caddy forces me to keep the other 899 bottles in my bathroom cabinet and just change them out when the mood strikes, all while keeping everything organized in the meantime. So let’s start at the bottom, shall we?

photo

When it comes to hair washing, the ratio in the shower is 3 to 1 in my favor. Garrett uses a Nioxin Shampoo that he has used forever, and one day he ran out of conditioner and just never bought anymore. That was like a year ago. Apparently this suits him despite my pleas for him to buy conditioner. Boys, I tell ya! They have it easy.

I, on the other hand, use a combination of Redken Products: Body Full Shampoo, Extreme Cat Protein Spray and Extreme Conditioner. If this sounds familiar, you’ve probably read Pinterest Hair Tutorial Celebrity Kate over at It’s The Small Things, because this is her recommended cleansing combo for Ladies Who Like Volume. FINE HAIRED LADIES: this combination is priceless.

Styling Sidebar: She also recommends these post-washing products which I am also prepared to evangelize if necessary:

Kenra 25 Volumizing Hairspray // Aquage Uplifting Foam (WORTH IT!!!)

So, next shelf up: Face Stuff

photo

Well, okay Face Stuff and my nifty helpers that keep my CrossFit calluses from wreaking havoc on my workouts. But let’s not talk about CrossFit Hands, and don’t worry, I won’t bust out any pictures of that! YUCK!

We both use the same face wash, and I expressed my love for it here once already. I still love it, but that doesn’t mean my face is really cooperating so I may switch it up soon because that is what I do with skincare. Garrett still loves it to pieces though, so it will probably stick around in our shower — like the Oil of Olay scrub — WHICH IS HIS. Just saying… 🙂

Next Stop: Good Smelling Yums
photo

This Nivea Body Wash smells exactly like what spring should smell like. A little citrusy, a litte clean — I AM IN LOVE WITH IT, currently. And the Need A Margarita Scrub is not too shabby either. That’s my razor — BOY RAZORS 4 EVA. I’ll never go back to the crappy razors they sell ladies. The never work as good no matter how pink and ergonomic and fancy they are.

Last Stop: Miscellany

photo

The things that end up here are my samples from Birchbox (the shampoo cream is this month’s), bars of soap (Dove – Nectarine and White Ginger!) and Garrett’s Shower Gel. It would also not be surprising to find a cup of coffee up there too in the morning. Garrett has talked me into this terrible habit of taking coffee in the shower. I mean WHO EVEN DOES THAT??? Beverages in the shower are for heathens!

And me now, apparently. Whatever.

So anyway…that’s what we use! Hope you’ve enjoyed this peek into the “Powder Room.” Do we use any of the same stuff? Dish it…

March 2012 // Books

photo

Ohmygosh, FINALLY!!! A month where I could exhale and read a little bit. 5 books, in fact — which may not seem like a lot to most of you but after the slow going January and February, I was so happy to be back to reading at least a book every week!

Goal of Reading 75 Books? — I’m not giving up on you yet — even though I’m 8 books behind! Eek! Clearly this means someone is just going to have to whisk me away to somewhere tropical where all I’m required to do is read books on the beach and drink frosty beverages. Aaaaaah, memories…

Here, hang on one second…let me go put that on the Honey Do List.

Anyway, onto the books…

1. Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) By Mindy Kaling

So, hearing this billed as Tina Fey 2.0, I wasn’t all that thrilled to read it. I mean, I enjoyed Bossypants well enough but not so much that I wanted to read the knock of version of it, you know? Also — I am sadly not a dedicated viewer of The Office. It’s a funny show, but I spend too much time juggling my DVR as it is that I just rarely try and get into sitcoms. That said, I enjoyed this book!

Mindy Kaling is funny and refreshing, and while this certainly is not the best book ever written — each chapter is completely unrelated so it doesn’t feel like the most cohesive work — they were mostly hilarious and fun to read. Reading her book made me feel like I wanted her to be my friend. She sounds like the type of person who you would want to be sitting next to at a boring party.

2. A Stolen Life by Jaycee Dugard HEY-O, shall we take a complete right turn? Because Jaycee Dugard’s book does not have AN OUNCE OF HUMOR in it. In fact it is totally disturbing and I just can not — I CAN NOT — get over the atrocities that she lived through for EIGHTEEN YEARS. And just a few hours away from her family the entire time! UGH!

Obviously it was a local story, so I think that is part of the reason that the whole book just freaked me out so much, but also you can’t help but feel like the authorities failed this little girl when you hear how many times there were options for intervention. Overall it’s just a harrowing story. The way it’s written isn’t particularly chronological, it’s sort of just memories of events that happened :::shudder::: and then her reflection on them now that she is free. Every cliche you can think of about human triumph in the face of adversity is applicable to this book. I don’t know how she wrote it.

3. Talking With My Mouth Full: My Life As A Professional Eater by Gail Simmons
So we’ve already talked about this book a little bit, but at that time I hadn’t quite finished it. It got…marginally better, but the Top Chef Insider Info wasn’t all that juicy. I am actually glad I read it though because I did find it kind of inspiring.Inspiring, you say? But I thought it was poorly written, self involved, and not that juicy?

It was kind of all of those things — but mostly it was a portrait of a career path that was non-linear and I feel totally inspired by that. I love to watch people pursue their passions and make a living out of it. It’s so…not black and white. There are no blueprints for how to do what you love // love what you do, so when I come across a living example of that I like to tuck it away as evidence in mind for creative and professional inspiration. So even though this book wasn’t the awesome page turner I had hoped, it was definitely a testament of passion. So for that, I’m glad I read it.

4. The Violets of March by Sarah Jio
So, I’m kind of embarrassed to tell you how much I loved this but here’s the deal: I did. I knew of this book, it was everywhere for a little bit, but it had that sort of flowery Jodi Piccoult vibe that I generally try to avoid so I never picked it up. Then I read the plot synopsis of Sarah Jio’s The Bungalow after reading this post and all of a sudden REALLY wanted to read that book. Unfortunately the hold list at the library was long, so I picked up Violets of March (it was just lying about, unloved on the shelf at the library) to see if I even liked Jio’s writing style.

Wow, this has gotten very off topic.

But the Cliffs Notes is? I did like it! This book ended up rocking because it was a story within a story (I love those! A mystery even…) that was told through an old diary, it took place on Bainbridge Island (which I just LOVED when we went to Seattle a couple years back, so I had warm fuzzy feelings about that the entire time I was reading) and then there’s a little bit of a love story in there. I mean, you guys it is SUPER FLUFFY CHICK LIT! (Or FWA-BWA as Garrett would say) but I loved it. If you’re into that stuff: Read It!

5. Everything Changes by Jonathan Tropper
So yeah, I’m basically a Jonathan Tropper Fan. If they had a fan club, I’d probably join it. Even though I found this slower than some of his other books to get in to, I just really loved the way describes people and things and he is just the kind of writer that I’m always in the mood to read. No matter what. And that says a lot, I think.

He is very nuanced at describing the psychology of relationships and can draw a comparison so accurate it hurts. He makes a book like this, where the plot isn’t really the driving force behind the page turning, keep you up all night reading. It’s pretty great. The only downside, and I wrote this on goodreads because DUDE — EVERYONE NEEDS THIS WARNING — is that I would have given it 5 stars except every time I picked it up and read the title I got that god damn 80s song of the same name in my head. And really? That I could have done without. But otherwise…pretty flawless.

Any must reads and recommends this month? Leave em in the comments. My library hold queue isn’t too busy this month, so I’m all ears!

Taco Salad: A Love Story

You all, it’s time.

It’s time for me to admit that I have an addiction that you probably caught on to ages ago if you have ever read one of my meal plans.

I am completely addicted to Taco Salad

I literally MUST eat it every week and I know that is just the most boring thing. I want to feel bad about it. I want to change my ways and be that person who whips up magical salads that are diverse all of the time. But this salad just sings its siren song too often, so nary a week goes by when I don’t eat it.

It’s simple and no frills, but I think it’s high time I told you about it in case you need a new addiction. It’s a piece of cake.

Ingredients:

1 Head of romaine
1 Cup Cherry Tomatoes sliced in half
1 Cup Cucumbers
Red or Yellow Bell Peppers to taste (I’ll just slice up an entire pepper because I’m CRAZY…woo hoo)
Half an Avocado, salted and diced
Thinly sliced red onion, if you don’t have a meeting right after lunch
3 sliced radishes
A handful of black olives
4-6 oz browned ground beef, mixed with this taco seasoning

Method:

Uh…mix it altogether and toss with dressing. That’s all folks.

Ah yes, let’s talk about dressing

You need this in your life!  It’s really that simple. And that, my friends, is my latest addiction.

Do you have a favorite lunch that you MUST HAVE every week. Do share!

Wedding Weekend!

So, I’m fairly certain I need to sleep for 24 hours straight!

I took the day off on Friday so we could head down to the bay area to see Garrett’s best friend get married. Aren’t Boy BFFs the cutest? I mean, us girls are always sharing the Best Friend necklaces and telling secrets and having each other’s backs, but there is something a little bit special when you find gentlemen, in their 30s, who have known each other for more than half of their lives, who still share the ups and downs of their lives on the regular. I don’t know, I think it’s pretty cute.

photo

So Friday was the rehearsal//dinner and Saturday was the big day. But we were also lucky enough to squeeze in some family time by staying with Garrett’s uncle on Friday night — which is always a good time. They are two peas in a pod, those guys, so I was basically entertained the entire time we were there — even just around the breakfast table.

photo

Oh, did I mention Garrett was the Best Man?
photo

(Who doesn’t love a dude in a tux?)

So obviously he had a little bit of nervous energy throughout the weekend. All the anticipation of ring holding and speech giving had him a bit preoccupied, but once that was out of the way it was all drinking and dancing and celebrating for the rest of the evening! He totally killed it on the speech — EVERYONE loved it and spent the rest of the evening telling him so — which made me feel very proud. He was so nervous and just wanted it to be perfect for Eric, and honestly (even though I know I see through rose colored glasses) it WAS perfect!

photo

I was excited (obviously for the event itself) but also because it meant I got to wear some fun dresses! Woot!

I treated myself to an airbrush tan beforehand — you know, due to unaccessorizable CrossFit injuries I was sporting on my legs — so I’ll be giving you the ins and outs of that this week. Sneak Preview: One Part awkward//One Part Awesome.

All in all a great time was had by everyone!

photophoto

Especially the bride and groom! I can’t wait to see the good pictures that a non-drunk person with a better than an iPhone-camera took.

photo

It was a quick and memorable weekend with little sleeping, terrible eating and lots of…well you know…
photo

Glad to be back to my routine, but so happy we got to be a part of such a momentous occasion!

Congrats Eric + Annie!
