Happy Friday and Some Questions

TGIF! Hot damn am I happy it is Friday!

I work 4 days next week, 2 days the week after that and then I am off until January 4th. I CAN’T WAIT. Down time at the end of the year is one of my favorite things! In the meantime, let’s chat. I have some Very Important (read: minimally important) questions for you.

*So I kind of wasn’t feeling any of the Radvent prompts, so I’m out on that. This is why I don’t do NaBloPoMo. I’m thinking in 2012 of experimenting with having a more formalized “Editorial Calendar” for the blog. Do you do this, or just wing it? How do you organize your ideas?

*My list of goals for next year is getting so freaking long but honestly the longer it gets the MORE EXCITED I GET. I think this is a sickness. 2012 is going to be a year full of documenting (since it will hopefully be the last year that our little family is just the two of us!) cooking, ass kicking, and some major steps towards some of my bigger LIFE DREAMS. EEEP! That makes me giddy. Are you making goals yet? Will you be posting them?

*All I want to do lately is cook crab. We’ve had it twice in the last week actually. Anyone have a recipe for a creative soup that involves crab? Does that even exist? I have 4 more “New Soups” to try and ALL I WANT TO EAT IS CRAB so I’m thinking there has to be a way to marry the two.

*I had to eat lunch at Olive Garden today and if there is a Hell on Earth for People Avoiding Gluten, I’m pretty sure that is it. I think they bread the lettuce over there. No question here, just had to get that editorial comment out there.

*I haven’t picked up a book in something like 3 days and I’m starting to feel withdrawals. Tragic. That said I’m *this close* to buying a Kindle as a little Christmas Present to myself. Do I go Basic or Fancy?

*Also, an iPhone. I KNOW. I need to join the 21st Century. Just the thought of having to figure out how to use it kind of freaks me out. My phone is practically circa 1996. I always go to Aussiebattery for cheap Uniden BT-446 battery. Tell me I will understand it?

*For the last 3 Christmases I have only had to buy one present. We don’t exchange on my mom’s side of the family (we just go all out on a festive dinner) and on my dad’s side we draw names and everyone just buys one gift. Garrett and I don’t exchange gifts — not as a rule, but just because neither of us are really gift people — so there is only one. One present! I realize this will probably change at some point when we have kids, but dude — I HIGHLY RECOMMEND. It leaves more time for menu planning — because in my mind that is the true JOY OF CHRISTMAS! ๐Ÿ™‚ If your partner is into the wild west, there is an online shop where you can find texas Themed Gifts which could be great birthday or Christmas presents.

What are you eating for Christmas Dinner? Do you do Turkey? Ham? Beef? Something different every year? Do you have an annual tradition or dish you can’t miss? Tell me. I love hearing about this stuff!

*What are you having for dinner on Christmas Eve? Christmas Day is handled around here but we are still tossing around Christmas Eve dinner ideas. Talk to me, creative folks…

*Also, have a damn good weekend! No question there.

2011 Autumn Bucket List — How’d I Do?

While it isn’t *exactly* winter yet, a few days in a row of frost and Christmas decorations everywhere have me mostly ready to say goodbye to fall and embrace winter. Or perhaps it’s because I didn’t really have the energy to do many of the things on my To-Do List so I’m just ready to put it to bed so it doesn’t hang over my head and taunt me anymore.

Home

*Plan and execute Fall Garden – So in the end I made a conscious decision NOT to do this. I wanted *to want* to do this but every time I sat down to decide what to grow or when we would plant or whatever, I just wanted to do something else. Maybe next year when I pull the summer stuff I’ll just immediately plant the fall stuff so I don’t have time to get lazy about it.

*Buy a ridiculously good smelling candle – I bought two. And used them often!
I'll give you one guess as to what's on my agenda today

*Paint AT LEAST one room – BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA My paint phobia continues despite support from everywhere. I need an intervention! But I think it *might* get done before the year is out. I’m going to attack the Master Bedroom since it is tiny.

Here is (mostly) what the walls currently looks like:

Master Bedroom

Here is what I would like the walls to look like:

source

The year is not over yet — it could happen!

*Have a Football Party – Nope. Sure didn’t. I mean, Super Bowl is still coming, but it’s not high on my list.

*Try 5 new soups — I think I’m extending this goal into winter because it is a fun one, I’m just moving slowly.

*Attempt to make a Paleo Pecan or Apple Pie — Here’s the thing about Paleo Pie — it’s not as good as regular pie. That’s not to say ALL Paleo Desserts are not as good, but in this particular instance I’m taking a stand. So I plan to just 80/20 that situation and have the real thing if necessary (YEAH, I said necessary. Sometimes pie is necessary!) Oddly enough, haven’t felt the urge to have either anyway, so why bother with a Paleo version.

*Bake apples in the crockpot
– Yep. And it wasn’t that exciting. Or photogenic. ๐Ÿ™‚

Fitness

*Beat last yearโ€™s 5k time (41 minutes) in Run to Feed the Hungry
I DID beat my time! And I did it with many fun folks from my gym. Despite the fact that it was pouring rain (we don’t even look wet in this picture and dude it was FREEZING AND RAINY) we all kicked ass and took names!

*Get a pull up on a DAMN BAND!
I did this too! And it was elusive for a whole year! There are three bands in the gym — blue is the most resistance (easiest), red is in the middle, and green is the least resistnace (hardest). I’m currently using the blue in WODs but practicing (successfully, 1 or 2 at a time) on the red. My goal on the white board at the gym is to have an unassisted pullup by June 2012.

*Do 10 non-girl pushups (current count was 3)
The current count is now 10! YAY! Hooray for increased upper body strength. I’m not doing them in WODS all the time because it kind of takes ALL MY ENERGY to do 10 pushups (ha!) and rarely is that the only element in the workout. But I CAN do it. Which makes me happy.

*Get some double unders, yo!
(Demo at 1:20. I really just linked to this because I kind of have a crush on Chris Spealler. Why is he only like 4 feet tall?)
Anyway, I got some! Now granted at the most I’ve only done 4 in a row but hey — STILL! I’m excited, but there is much work to do!

Fun

*Keep up with Autumn Minibook — I did this and it was great! I show you the results sometime soon. It was a blast!

*Read 10 books (Sept-Nov) — I did! But just barely.

*Carve Pumpkins with Garrett – Fail. I’m probably going to be a terrible, lazy parent because I just couldn’t get excited about doing this, this year. I think I was too distracted eating ALL! THE! HALLOWEEN! CANDY!

*Figure out some legit Halloween costumes for the annual party we get invited to — YEP. I showed you already.

*Do an updated photo sitting with Donna Beck Photography โ€“ professional, blog photos, xmas card photos, family photos
*Ahem* Send Christmas Cards (well, towards the end of fall)
Let’s talk about Christmas Cards. While I love getting them, even the fact that Tiny Prints offered me 50 FREE CHRISTMAS CARDS to blog about them couldn’t even get me motivated. That is a sad situation, y’all. That said, I still need to take some updated pictures — especially to replace these blog ones that don’t even really look like me anymore. MUST DO!

*Soak in hot springs – No dice. Sadly.

*Have a FABULOUS GIRLS WEEKEND with AndreAnna and Liz – Um, done.

P1040080

Fashion

*Buy a loud colored coat – I bought a cream colored coat and I love it. No shame.

*Wear more of your fun hats – haven’t worn a single one. FAIL.

*Buy some fun tights – Yep. I bought a few pairs and I’ve worn them and loved them. Apparently not enough to photograph though.

*Find a damn perfect pair of boots! — I did. You’ve seen them. And I have a black pair too — and I love them both!

30 Days of Denim - Day Thirteen

***

Wow, I guess I did a little more achieving than I thought. I was feeling pretty down about all of my laziness this season but the truth is I did more than I thought! This is just why I do this — writing it down sort of burns the intention into my brain.

I’m not doing a Winter Bucket List because winter is for hibernating, and of course finishing up anything outstanding on my annual goals. But also, because I’m thinking more along the lines of wrapping up the end of the year and global planning for 2012. I’ve already got a head start on making Personal, Professional, Blog and Fitness goals so there will be many lists to come, don’t worry! The Bucket List will be back come spring!

November Books

My book choices were kind of all over the place this month which definitely made things interesting. Chick Lit, Memoirs, Thrillers, Young Adult — I found a little bit of everything! I picked up some books I loved, slogged through some books I should have put down and finally (FINALLY) read The Hunger Games. So many books, so little time!

While I started reading 9 books I only finished 7. But it was still a good month and it’s been a good year. I’ve read 63 books on a goal of 50 for those of you counting so I guess I’m going to have to make a better stretch goal next year. That freaks me out just thinking about it.

Anyway, on to the books!

Then Came You by Jennifer Weiner

So I am completely okay with acknowledging that my reaction to this book was heavily based on the fact that I had just spent a month reading a trippy, scary book. All I wanted was something light. Something fluffy. The cotton candy of books, as it were. And of course, this delivered. If I’m being honest, the characters were a bit one dimensional and it was somewhat hard to connect to them. But that was okay for me because I just wanted to flip pages and feel happy. Done and done.

Random fun fact about this book: Do you read Door Sixteen? Of course you do because you are creative and fabulous and way cooler than me. Anyway, she designed this book cover as well as many others I love and have read. You probably have too. Check it out. Does that not sound like the best job ever?

Unbearable Lightness by Portia de Rossi

I need to find a more creative way to apologize for the fact that I seem to enjoy really depressing memoirs. I don’t know what’s wrong with me. We can still be friends though, right? Obviously unless you have been living under a rock or have never watched Oprah, you know this is an anorexia memoir. Sidebar: when I mentioned that I might read an anorexia memoir on twitter earlier this month you should have seen the spam I got in response. Anyway — depressing content, celebrity author: this was right up my alley. And yet, I didn’t love it.

I think there is just something hard about hearing about the Poor Me Stories of Hollywood’s Rich and Famous. I mean, I get why she ended up anorexic but I don’t know, the way it was written just sort of irked me. I was interested in the behind the scenes stuff about Ally McBeal because when I was living in LA and working in Brentwood a lot of the cast were regular customers. But even the juicy stuff just read sort of flat. She seems fairly happy now though, so hey — good on her!

Hush by Kate White

So there are so many ridiculous plot points in this book that are not even remotely believable. The main character wakes up and finds the coworker she just slept with murdered and she just leaves the apartment? Crazy stuff is going on at the fertility clinic that she works with, everyone is a suspect, and she just goes aimlessly wandering through files doing some Nancy Drew shit? She teams up with a reporter who is totally ethical and not at all in it for a story? I mean so! many! unbelievable things!

But also: it is totally compulsively readable and I loved flipping through every page. I couldn’t wait to see what happened next and if my guesses about the killer were right (they weren’t) and overall it just was so enjoyable. I think it’s safe to say this was like bad television but in book form. It has it’s place and sometimes I really like it!

My only complaint (and it’s kind of my own fault) is that if you flip to the last page — the killer is named right then and there. There is basically a sentence that says “(Main Character) couldn’t believe that (Murderer’s Name) had committed all of the crimes.” And man, I am known to poke around the back of the book now and again. I don’t *try* and read the ending but you couldn’t help it with this book if you get anywhere near the last page. So um…don’t…if you plan to read this.

Oprah: A Biography by Kitty Kelley

I wanted to love this book, I really did. And I don’t doubt that it is full of interesting things if you are not too aware of Oprah and her story. But as I have watched way too many E! True Hollywood Stories and Lifetime profiles, it became clear that I was, perhaps, not the target audience. In the end I put it down before finishing because it seemed a little mean spirited in parts and because there weren’t any new revelations. Also because I was listening to it on audio book and it was TWENTY DISCS. So you really have to love something to commit to TWENTY DISCS. Additionally it was narrated by the author who just does not have a future in radio, if you know what I’m saying.

What I did find sort of interesting for a while though was the fact that Oprah didn’t cooperate and wouldn’t be interviewed for the book. Kitty Kelley spends a lot of time discussing this and of course what it means to write an “Unauthorized Biography” right off the bat and I found it a little fascinating. Kelley (or perhaps her assistants, more likely) pieced together the entire book from interviews that Oprah had given to others. She chose to make an entirely separate text from already existing interviews and psychological conclusions based on what information was and wasn’t divulged at different times. Watching her craft that was interesting and a little meta, to be quite frank, but I’m not sure I buy it as 100% accurate, which is how Kelley sells it. “These are Oprah’s words. I’m just repeating them. No judgment here!” But there was a lot of bias.

Beaten, Seared and Sauced: On Becoming a Chef at the Culinary Institute of America by Jonathan Dixon

This was another book I wanted to love, but just kept putting it down because I wasn’t really drawn in. The premise is so interesting though, right? Behind the scenes at the Culinary Institute of America — I mean, what the heck is that like? I’m dying to know.

And I’m still dying to know because after 3 weeks of it sitting on my nightstand I still didn’t have any desire to finish it.

The weird part is, Dixon is a pretty engaging writer. I think the book was just too chronological to really peak my interest. I wanted to hear more of a story, not just a description of events. I’m sure it is a good book, it just wasn’t a good fit for me at the time. Maybe you will pick it up and read it and actually finish it? If you do: TELL ME WHAT IT IS LIKE!

The End of Everything by Megan Abbott

I do not say this very often, and I want to be somewhat delicate about this, but I can’t: I REALLY DID NOT LIKE THIS BOOK. It’s 200 some odd pages of my life I will never get back.

Two things to note:
1) This is not the author’s normal genre and she is quite notable in her genre of choice
2) TONS of people seem to love this book on goodreads

I didn’t for two main reasons. The first — it was completely overwritten in a way that I find super irritating. The author was trying very hard to create nostalgia and to me it was so heavy handed I felt suffocated. Every freaking adjective was hyphenated — The two friends weren’t close they were “body-close,” her comforter was “bed-wraggled,” every single adjective was qualified in a way that was supposed to provide insight and nuance in its description and it just made me want to throw the book across the room. But I kept reading.

The premise was interesting: two young best friends, one disappears — what happens in the aftermath? You want to know, right? Well so do I, still! The ending was totally not resolved in a way that was satisfying or that made sense. Not that we don’t find out what happens to the friend, but it just seems way out in left field and then there is this sick undercurrent of incest and molestation and grooming and it’s never really confirmed or denied so it just seems icky and unnecessary. I’m sorry, but man I hated it. Thank god it was short.

The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins

I left these for last because, well — they were the last books I read this month! But also because I wanted to talk about them collectively. Full disclosure — I have a few pages left to go in Mockingjay but I’m done enough that we are counting it towards November ok? Okay! This is my website, I make up the rules! ๐Ÿ™‚

For the most part — I loved these books. After a terrible, horrible, no-good, very-bad book (hyphenated adjectives used for effect!) it was nice to flip through something that had a clear narrative arc and no creepy molesting undertones. The first book was awesome, I couldn’t put it down. The second was pretty interesting but became sort of repetitive at the end. And the third — well, seemed a little slapped together. It was my least favorite, but I hear I am not in the minority on that.

That said — I would SO RECOMMEND THIS TO OTHERS. And now all of you are like “Duh, welcome to the party.” But it took me a long time to *want* to read these because I’m not really a fan of dystopian worlds and all that business. But this had just the right mix of complete and utter ridiculousness, mixed with believability.

It was a good time, that trilogy. So now that I TOTALLY trust your advice, what do I read next? Stopping to read all The Hunger Games books has completely screwed up my library book schedule so I’m open to suggestions! ๐Ÿ™‚

Brown Butter Pumpkin Muffins with Vanilla Cinnamon Cream Cheese Frosting

Everyone needs a little (grain-free, gluten-free HA!) treat once in a while, yes? Might I recommend these delicious little nuggets of seasonal sustenance if you are committed to clean eating yet still jonesing for a sweet treat?

Pumpkin Muffins with Vanilla Cinnamon Cream Cheese Frosting

Amelia shared the original recipe with me, but instead of fussing with a cake, I just decided to fly by the seat of my pants, mix up the batter, bust out my silicone muffin cups (fantastic and cheap kitchen investment!) and call it breakfast.

It was a good decision.

Pumpkin Muffins with Vanilla Cinnamon Cream Cheese Frosting

Adapted from Redeeming the Table
Makes 12 Muffins

Ingredients

For the cake:
ยฝ cup unsalted butter, grass-fed, more for pans
12 oz (3 cups) blanched almond flour
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp ground ginger
3/4 tsp ground nutmeg
3/4 tsp sea salt
1/4 tsp ground cloves
ยฝ cup honey
3 large eggs, room temperature
1 1/2 cups pumpkin puree

For the Honey-Cinnamon Frosting:
ยผ cup unsalted grass-fed butter
8 oz cream cheese, room temperature
ยฝ cup honey
2 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp vanilla

Method

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees

2. Melt the butter in a 1 quart heavy bottomed pan, stirring occasionally until the butter turns a nutty golden-brown (around 4-6 minutes).

The browned butter will have three parts to it. The bubbly part on the top, the golden brown clarified butter/ghee, & the burnt milk solids at the bottom. Scrap off the bubbles & discard. Pour the golden brown ghee/clarified butter into a pyrex style measuring cup, and try to keep the browned bits out.

Set aside & allow it to cool.

3. In a large bowl, add all of your dry ingredients and whisk them together (almond flour, spices, salt, & baking soda).

In a medium bowl, combine honey, eggs, & pumpkin puree & whisk thoroughly to combine. Add the browned butter to the wet ingredients to incorporate all the way.

With a rubber spatula, stir in the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until thoroughly combined & fully incorporated.

4. Ladle into muffin cups. They will be pretty darn full. Batter will rise a bit but not a ton, so it’s okay. Bake for 30-40 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Your nose will know, it’s a pretty aromatic recipe.

5. Make the frosting! Take your room temperature butter & cream cheese & beat them with a hand mixer on medium-high speed. Add your honey, cinnamon and vanilla to the mixture and whip until smooth. Taste and adjust as desired.

6. Frost and Enjoy! I like to frost mine when the muffins are still warm as the frosting gets a little melty. Then pour yourself a cup of coffee and enjoy your little treat!

Look Better Naked: Week One

So it’s a week into this Look Better Naked Challenge and I have had some wins and some losses.

Nutrition

*Week day nutrition gets an A+. I wasn’t tempted at all to eat crap at the office! I credit this to having a plan for breakfast each day and I fully intend to continue that next week as well. Also, I hydrated like a crazy person! And besides the inconvenience of running to the bathroom every five minutes, it made me feel infinitely better.

*Weekend nutrition gets a pretty solid C. We had our ARCFit Holiday Party Friday night and I definitely had my share of red wine. More than I should have really, but I don’t regret it at all. Buy vegan wine so you won’t feel guilty having a glass every night. It was so nice to cut loose with friends that you bust ass with all week long and have a glass of wine (or two, or twenty) while you’re lookin’ fancy!

2011 ARCFit Holiday Party

I also had some very Non-Paleo treats throughout the evening but I also tempered it with some serious vegetable chomping. For a party it wasn’t a total fail!

*Morning After Nutrition gets an F. The morning after that party — well, I was feeling the effects. I didn’t have much but coconut water all day since I wasn’t feeling super hot (Can’t stay out until 3AM like I used to. HA!) By evening, I sure wasn’t cooking so we ended up getting: MEXICAN FOOD. Ah, the hangover cure for everything! Paleo? Nope. But it’s one meal, and I’m over it. On to the next week!

Overall Nutrition Grade: B-

Fitness

Compared to Nutrition, Fitness was a total slam dunk!

*I worked out four times, which was my goal. YAY!

A Wall ball workout that I didn’t love.
A serious shoulder burner that I did like pretty well.
A 5 AM workout that had me actually getting up on the rope a little. And
A CRAZY WOD that has my ass still sore as I type this.

And also I was chosen to be the December Athlete of the Month at my gym. I just about dropped dead, you all, but it was so nice to get a little pat on the back right when I was struggling, you know?

Overall Fitness Grade: A

Sleep

* I slept 7 hours per night every single night except one and even then it was a good 6 and half hours. What can I tell you — I’ve been enjoying The Hunger Games books. Sometimes they are hard to put down.

*4 nights I slept 8+ hours. Win!

Overall Sleep Grade: A-

*****

One week down, five to go!

My goal this week is to keep up all the good things from last week, plus taper off my food tracking. Last week I was VERY anal retentive about it, which in the end helped me out — I’m down more than 5lbs. But I get obsessive and a little bitchy when I am inputing every single gram of food I eat. NO I DON’T WANT A BITE OF YOUR FUCKING BANANA YOU JERK- DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY CARBOHYDRATES THAT HAS IN IT?

Yeah, I don’t want to be like that.

So this week, I’m going to log everything I eat and how I feel. No grams, no counting, just general awareness. And see how I do approaching things a little more intuitively. Also, I’m going to workout like a mad woman!

Let’s hope it works.

What’s For Dinner?

Pike Place

It’s a new week and I’m feeling excited to cook. I’m actually stealing a few things off last week’s menu because we didn’t get to eat everything. I made lots of extras last week apparently so we spent some lunches/dinners eating leftovers instead of trying new recipes.

This looks like a pretty mellow week socially (which for December — WHAT A RELIEF!) so we will probably be laying low, working out, enjoying some good eats and resting up for next week, since that includes one of our favorite holiday parties of the year!

Monday
Lunch: Turkey Chili (The pot is simmering right now and my house smells delicious!)
Dinner: Crock Pot Pot Roast + Cabbage and Onions + Carrots

Tuesday
Lunch: Green Curry Chicken with Broccoli Slaw
Dinner: Turkey Spanikopita Burgers + Sauteed Zucchini + Squash w/ Fox Point Seasoning

Wednesday
Lunch: Gyro Salads with ground beef
Dinner: Pork Chops with Sweet Onion Jam + Roasted Brussels Sprouts + Caesar Salads

Thursday
Lunch: Sun Dried Tomato and Basil Chicken Sausages w/ Roasted Broccoli
Dinner: Chicken with Balsamic Peppers + Spinach Salads

Friday
Lunch: Grilled Chicken Thigh Salads
Dinner: Chili Burgers + Sweet Potato Fries with BBQ of the Americas (This combo is newly discoverd for us and make the BEST FRIES EVER!) + Cucumber and Tomato Salad

Saturday
Lunch: Bacon, Leek and Feta Frittata
Dinner: General Tso’s Chicken + Cauli Rice (From last week’s menu but we didn’t get to try it!)

Sunday
Shop!

Are you trying any new recipes this week?

Radvent Day Two // Balance

I love end of year reflection, so I’ve decided to participate in Princess Lasertron’s 2011 Radvent. I enjoyed reading the posts last year, so this year I’m going to take the time to do a little journaling each day. Check out the details here.

*****

This is such an apt prompt for me since I feel like all I do is wax philosophical on balance. Does it surprise you that I’m a Libra? It probably shouldn’t.

The secret to how I do it all is that I don’t. This year I’ve come to terms with the fact that you really CAN have everything, you just can’t have it all at once. And really having a *knowing* about that, has been my biggest light bulb this year. Yeah I just got a little hippy woo woo on you. What of it?

Balance is a choice. And on some days I make better choices than others, just like with anything. Here is how I find focus — which for me leads to more balance:

I think about what I really want my life to look and feel like.
I try to assess my current situation as accurately as possible.
I work backwards and set goals.
I make lists.
I find mentors. (Even if that seems dorky.)
I say my intentions out loud. (Dorkier.)
I figure out how to do things better if I fail.
I ask for help from friends.
I spend time alone.
I read books.
I sleep, and take bubble baths and burn candles.
I remind myself to be grateful for whatever situation I’m in.

And if none of that works? Well, I change my direction and then start over from the top.

This year for me has been about improving health. It’s been about seeking sanity. About making space in my life for a baby. Many times that has meant I’ve skipped something else that I think is *important.* But more often than not, the important things have found me when I had some time to spare. Or they have stayed around in my psyche reminding me they exist every once in a while. There is time for everything, but the time for everything isn’t now. I have been diligent and focused, but this year I have also felt in balance.

And I hope I keep making that choice in 2012.
