The Week In Workouts

The Week In Workouts

Another Monday here and another week to get in some good workouts. I need a clean slate after last week’s ups and downs with respect to gym time. To obtain better results you cn combine the workout with natural testosterone boosters.

Here’s how it shook out:

Monday

LIFT

Snatch: Spend 15 minutes working up to a heavy 1 rm – I worked up to 110 lbs and it’s like I have a mental breakdown afterward. It’s all in my head that I can’t catch 115 and beyond, so I’m going to work on that, dang it!

Then: 3 x 3 of Overhead Squats @ 50% of that weight with a 3 second pause at the bottom

METCON

For Timeโ€ฆ
15 Snatch* (Rx’d was 95lbs. I scaled to 75lbs)
30 push-ups
400m run
10 Snatch
20 push-ups
400m run
5 Snatch
10 push-ups

Despite the fact that I don’t love running, I really loved this workout! It was challenging in all the best ways.

Tuesday

LIFT

Clean & Jerk
Take 15 min and build to a heavy 1RM, then
3ร—3 Front Squat @ 50% of C&J w/3 second pause at the bottom of each rep

I ended up with a 1 RM of 155lbs on my clean and jerk, which I think is a new PR. It felt dang heavy, so I’ll take it. I’m also having a love affair with front squats lately. Maybe this sounds weird, but they are seriously THE BEST ab exercise. Heavier front squats always make me feel like I did a billion situps the next day.

3 Rounds For Time:

20 T2B (scaled)
30 KB Swings (53 lbs)
40 Double Unders

I broke in my new jump rope on this workout (I know, it’s obnoxious) and enjoyed myself.

Wednesday

Rest!

Thursday

Still Resting! Actually, I had planned to go to the gym this evening but Garrett ended up getting some good news at work and I was feeling celebratory, so we stayed home and cooked steaks and drank cider on the patio.

Friday

Ok, now I was just being lazy. This is what happens to me when I take a couple days off in a row. Someone asked me last week how many days I’d like to be crossfitting, and the answer to that varies. But mostly I can say this: I like to be active 6 days a week with 1 day of just complete rest. In my ideal world I’d CrossFit 4-5 days per week, do yoga 1-2 days per week (a mix of bikram, vinyasa or yin — depending on what is calling to me), and then do something active and outside 1 day on the weekend like take my dog for a longer walk or run or something. So that is my overall goal. It keeps me feeling alive, happy, energized and engaged. When I skip a few too many workouts I start to feel lethargic and then sort of fall headfirst into a bag of sweet potato chips on the couch — which is sort of what happened this weekend.

OBVIOUSLY I did not make that workout goal this week. ๐Ÿ™‚

Saturday

Over the weekend I did this workout with a 53lb kettlebell because that is the only size we have at homoe (OOF!) and it was super quick and fun. Neghar’s You Tube Channel is awesome.

Garrett actually went to open gym (I couldn’t drag myself because I was SO DANG TIRED from the week, and he re-did Workout 14.4. Crazy person! He got 16 more reps though so he was pretty proud of himself. )

Sunday

On Sunday the beasty got a nice long walk, and then I ate a lot of sweet potato chips on the couch. We were both pretty thrilled.

Buster is acting like a nutter butter this morning and is OBSESSED with his toy. Not good for getting ready for work, but I'm SO GLAD he's not feeling sick anymore!

And that’s how this week shaped up! Any PRs or awesome workouts for you?

Wednesday Bullets

Cotton Candy Clouds

Should we talk about some totally random and unimportant things?

Excellent. I thought so too! ๐Ÿ™‚

*****

*FOR STARTERS: Do you have a juicer? Do you like it? Do you want to recommend it to me? Here is some backstory that you might find useful: I am actually not really a “juice person.” I don’t mean to get into a huge polarizing debate about whether juicing is the NEXT! BEST! THING! FOR YOUR HEALTH! or whether it’s COMPLETE! HOGWASH! AND PAVING THE WAY FOR DIABETES! (These seem to be the two major camps that many people fall into with respect to juicing) but I am tip toeing around the idea of getting a juicer.

It is not because I want to cure any health problems, or because I want to pave the way for diabetes by drinking all that fiberless sugar — I mostly want to buy a juicer because Garrett + I REALLY REALLY REALLY like the kale, cucumber, celery + pineapple juice they sell at Whole Foods and it is SIX DOLLARS PER BOTTLE which happens to be the exact price of HIGHWAY ROBBERY. Did you know? So it occurred to me the other day that based on the number of bottles we have purchased in the last two months, we frankly could have already have bought a Centrifugal juicer. Now it’s just economics, ya know. ๐Ÿ™‚ Why not get my own juicer?

Like I said though, I’m not really that into juicing and I don’t plan to do it everyday or anything, and I’m not really dying to spend hundreds of dollars (uh, at least on an appliance, I guess. Since I’ve probably already spent that in juice. DAMN. Maybe I am willing to spend hundreds of dollars. Feel free to try and convince me.) Anyway, juicer education/recommendations: I am inviting them!

Dinner!

*So while we are talking recommendations — can we talk about salads? (Spinach and Taco Salads are always in the rotation over here, duh.) And lately ALL I WANT TO EAT is salad, but I’m getting a little bored with the salads I’m making. It’s the same romaine, cucumber, tomato, pepper, avocado mix and I just switch up the dressing/protein and ohmylord I am falling asleep just thinking about it. I need some motivation to go out and buy radishes or something, you know? I want to hear about the BEST! SALAD! EVER! Help me get out of my rut, would ya?

*I read the other day that Kurt Cobain has been dead for 20 years. And then I went searching for my AARP card because, WHAT?

*Internet, I feel like you have been holding out on me because none of you ever mentioned Tuna Melts My Heart. Now all I do all day is refresh my Instagram feed hoping for a Tuna update.

*It’s almost the end of April and if you’ve been around this blog for a while you know I generally get the itch to change my hair in spring and in fall. YEP, THAT IS ME SCRATCHING. But surprisingly I have zero desire to cut it short. My last haircut was just…well, it was too short for my life. The gym was a pain, styling it was a pain, everything was a pain and so now I’m in that phase of growing it out where it is just barely long enough to get in a ponytail (YAY!) but doing nothing at all interesting. WOE IS ME. Maybe I need to bust out my curling iron or rock a little braid action or something. Why is hair so complicated?

*I think we are going to go Maui around Christmas/New Year’s and now all of a sudden I would like to drink ALL the mai tais. Anyway, it has made me think about traveling and souvenirs and I got to talking with friends recently about what constitutes a souvenir as you get older. How do YOU commemorate a trip? I have friends who always buy a nice handbag or pair of sunglasses on a vacation (so they have the memory, but also something practical they’ll use.) I have friends who make awesome videos/scrapbooks/photobooks. I have friends who collect sand and do other pinterest-y things. What do YOU do? I always like hearing these kinds of creative ideas.

*I bought a workout dvd. I don’t even know the last time I bought a workout dvd, mostly because I hate working out alone and in my living room. But it was $6 on amazon and when I bought it I was having a hard time juggling evening workouts and it was Bob Harper and he CrossFits so I thought it might be CrossFit-esque and well…it isn’t necessarily. But it’s still kind of enjoyable. So if you are looking for a workout dvd, I recommend!

Dinner: The Unstyled Version.

*So hey, do you ever feel like you are being watched? ๐Ÿ™‚ HEH

Happy Hump Day, y’all!

The Week In Workouts

The Week In Workouts

Happy Monday! It’s Monday all darn day, isn’t it? HUMPH. I started my Monday off with an early morning workout, so I’m feeling like this week will be manageable, but before we get into that, let’s talk about last week’s workouts.

Monday

LIFT
Deadlift:
Spend 15 minutes working up to a heavy 5 rm

I worked up to about 205 and then called it a day. I find that I don’t lift as heavy in the mornings as I do in the afternoons, but generally perform better with metcons. Weird. Anyway.

METCON

21-15-9*
Power Clean
Strict Pull-Up

*Complete 35 double-unders before each round

The Rx’d weight was 105, but I scaled and did 95lbs. And thank god, because that ended up being HARD. My grips strength sucks, so after dead lifts and then doing pullups (which I scaled too!) my grip strenth struggled with 95lb cleans. This was one was harder than I thought it would be.

Tuesday

I had an early am teleconference so I couldn’t get in at 5am. And then honestly after a long day when it was still 80 degrees at 5pm, I just didn’t feel like doing the workout. ๐Ÿ™‚ The weather is ready for tank tops but my arms are NOT. I’m going to have to wrap my brain around tank tops no matter what here shortly because it’s getting too warm to workout in sleeves.

Wednesday

Lift
Hang Clean 3-3-3
Power Clean 3-3-3
Squat Clean 3-3-3

I started these sets around 75lbs and worked my way up to 135lbs.

Metcon
7 min AMRAP
Row for Cal
Box Jumps (24/20)

(3, 3, 6, 6, 9, 9, 12, 12โ€ฆ)

Buy Out:
10 wall walks

NY Res to get better at body weight exercises like wall walks. Also to NOT play dead on the gym floor #htcone #trooponex

OOF!

Thursday

Thursday was pretty much the same story as Tuesday. I had a pretty intense week at work this week, and on week’s like that if I’m not hitting 5 or 6am, I’m not working out. By the time I get to the end of the day I’m just mentally worked!

Friday

LIFT

Floor Press:
Work toward a 3RM
Once found, 3 x 3 @ 60-65% of your 3RM weight

I had never done floor presses before. Super different! I think I worked up to 115lbs.

METCON
โ€œThe Chiefโ€
Max rounds in 3 minutes:
3 power clean (95lbs)
6 push ups
9 squats
rest 1 minute (Our coach says “The “Rest” portion just means breathe really hard for 60 seconds” And that about summed it up.)

Repeat 4 more times for 5 total cycles.

This was AWESOME/AWFUL! I loved this workout and it sucked supremely all at the same time. You know how that is, right? Like it was awful but I can’t wait to do it again. I dunno. I’m crazy. Whenever I see air squats in a workout I feel like “Oh, this should be nice” but then when the workout is done and you realize you just did EIGHTEEN ROUNDS of those air squats, all of a sudden it’s like “Oh shit, that’s gonna hurt tomorrow.”

And it did. ๐Ÿ™‚

Open gym. Woot! ( that's a fake it til you make it woot. I'm tired.)

Saturday

Saturday I did a bazillion errands, took Buster to get his weekly B12 shot and then took him for a long walk. That was about it on the workout frong.

Sunday

I did bicep curls with my mimosa glass. ๐Ÿ™‚ hehe

We had Easter brunch with my whole family and I spent the day catching up with people instead of working out. It was nice.

What about you? Any PRs, or crazy fun workouts? Do tell….

Fun Things To Read On A Friday

Buster has a secret

Howdy folks!

Hope your Friday has gotten off to a good start. Mine began with a 40 minute pre-work excursion of trying to round up some dogs who were lost and find a safe place for them. Luckily while I was trying to corral them, their worried owner swung by in a car. They’d been looking all over for them, so it was nice to help reunite them. DRAMATIC for a moment, but in the end – nice. Good Deed For The Day: Done! Now, if I could just keep my life dog-drama free for a few days, that would be great! haha

Hope you have some fun plans this weekend. We are dining with friends, seeing some live music, having an Easter Brunch with my WHOLE FAMILY (this happens so rarely, that all of us can get into one house together at the same time) and so we will definitely be drinking some bloody marys and eating some Eggs Benedict. I’ll probably squeeze in some workouts and some reading (currently reading this and it’s just as cotton candy awesome as you would imagine) and I have to admit, I’m looking forward to it all.

Since it’s Friday and it’s been a while since we talked about fun linksย  let’s do that, shall we?

The Week In Workouts

The Week In Workouts

I had a pretty good run of posting workouts for a while and loved how they made me accountable! I think people are often looking for the next great workout craze to get them into tip top shape. While I love trying new things, I’ve also found that when I personally am at my fittest it isn’t necessarily WHAT I’m doing but HOW I’m doing it: With Some Consistency. I’ve spent the last 5 weeks laying a really good foundation of consistent workouts. I’m hoping that starting to share them again will help me keep it up!

Also I love to hear what you guys are doing. Had a completely awesome workout that was enjoyable or where you really kicked ass? Tell me about it. It gives me good ideas for open gym days, home workouts, or just when I’m trying to spice up my fitness life! Share the wealth. ๐Ÿ™‚

Monday

Garrett and I have been regularly doing 5 am workouts on Monday/Tuesday/Thursdays and we are loving it. (Well, uh, not the part where the alarm goes off at 4am, but the part where our evenings are completely free and we don’t have to drag our butts to the gym after long days at work.) But this Monday was the day we had to take Buster into the emergency vet so we actually didn’t workout at all.

(Update on Buster: He’s medicated and seems to be doing better symptoms-wise, although we are still waiting for some test results to get to the root of his digestive problems.)

Tuesday

We played a little catch up on Tuesday morning at 5am and did the lifting from Monday’s workout.

Front Squat:

10 @ 50% of 1 rm (I didn’t have my last 1RM written down [Bad CrossFitter!] so I just used 140lbs)
8 @ 60%
6 @ 70%
max reps @ 80%

The Metcon seemed fairly simple but WOW did it pack a punch!

Tabata
(8 rounds of 20 sec on/10 seconds off for each movement. Finish all 8 before moving to the next movement)
Row
Jumping Pull-Up
Double-Under
Push Up

My shoulders were super smoked after this one!

Wednesday

Wednesday is usually an evening workout, but Buster was back at the vet so I skipped it. (I wrote about Wednesday, it was not a great day frankly.) But the workout was something I was DYING to do, so I made a promise to myself that I’d do it during open gym on Saturday.

Thursday

Another 5am-er.

STRENGTH:

4 Rounds
50m Sled Pull forward
50m Sled Pull backward

The limiting factor here was definitely those sled pulls backward. I was only about to do about 215lbs and man did it make my quads BURN!

METCON:

800m Run
50 Ball Slams (30lbs)
800m Run
50 Toes to Bar (Scaled these)

The running was just awful, but the rest of this workout was fine. I actually really enjoyed how challenging the sled pulls were. It’s been a while since I’ve done them.

Friday

STRENGTH:

4 Power Clean + 4 Jerk @ 50% of jerk 1 rm (Started using 155lbs as my 1RM)
3 PC + 3 Jerk @ 60
3 PC + 2 Jerk @ 70
2 PC + 1 Jerk @ 80
2 PC + 1 Jerk @ 85

So this was funny because as I got to the last few rounds the jerks were just SO DAMN HEAVY and I couldn’t figure out why — until I realized I was using my Clean 1RM weight and not my Jerk 1RM weight. My Jerk 1RM is only 135 and I had been doing the math off of 155lbs so AY YAY YAY, let’s just say my shoulders got some extra work in!

METCON:

“Jackieโ€
1000 m row
50 thrusters (45 barbell)
30 pull ups

OOF. You can imagine how this went after totally burning out my shoulders on the lift. This workout was HA-ARD!

Saturday

I was up bright and early kind of giddy to do that workout that I missed on Wednesday. It involves a number of my favorite things and despite being a running workout, I just thought it would be really fun!

4 Rounds for Time:

400 m run
10 power snatch (65 lbs)
15 overhead squat

HAHAHAHAHAHA. FUN???? Oh man, this was so much harder than I anticipated.

Snatches and Overhead Squats are my favorite but I think because my shoulders definitely got a working this week, I was not at my strongest by Saturday and wow did I feel it during this particular metcon. I mean, I actually looked forward to the running each round, and that NEVER happens! It took a little over 20 minutes and my arms were just quivering when I was done. I went home and immediately took a hot bath and a nap. Worth it!

Sunday

Sunday I talked Garrett into taking a Vinyasa Flow class with me at my yoga studio and you guys: HE LIKED IT!!!

I feel prepared to take on hostage negotiation now. ๐Ÿ™‚

*****

So that was my week in workouts. Did you do any workouts that rocked your world this week? Hit any PRs? Do tell.

How My Whole 30 Turned Into A Whole 24

New Fave Brekkie: Roasted Kale, Spicy Sausage + A Fried Egg!

In the past month:

*We’ve found out a friend had cancer and had surgery
*We’ve found out a family member had cancer and had surgery
*We’ve found out that family member needed more surgery
*We’ve had an immediate member of our family have a stroke
*I’ve been assigned to a new position at work, so I am wrapping up loose ends with the old one and transitioning to the new one

In the past week:

*I’ve written a check that is 3 times the size of our rent to the IRS
*Buster has been the sickest he’s ever been which meant not a lot of sleep for us, and a significant amount of hand wringing about what to do
*He’s been to the vet twice, requiring both of us to rearrange our work schedules and to rely on my mom to help watch him
*We’ve spent our vacation fund that we were planning to use on a quick getaway on tests to help us more accurately diagnose what is going on with our dog baby

*****

I was doing fine with all of this until about Wednesday night. Day 24 of our Whole 30, by the way, which frankly is probably why had been in a pretty good mental space despite all of the stuff going on. It had been a long day, and our second trip to the vet and honestly I was just feeling all of the feelings. My solution? Frozen yogurt for dinner. And you know what? It worked. :)It was 80 degrees, we ate outside with Buster who was showing signs of feeling better and we coasted over that mid-week hump. Last night we got together with friends and there was crackers and blue cheese with chunks of honey comb and whole roasted branzino and artichokes with aioli and wine (oh the wine!) and fresh ravioli. And then for dessert the most darling little glasses of strawberry coconut panna cotta paired with white riesling and it honestly couldn’t have been less Whole 30 approved.

And it was FABULOUS. The friends, the conversation, the dogs all playing together in the backyard — it was just what the doctor ordered. But also, in an effort to be transparent, the indulgence was about 6 days ahead of schedule. ๐Ÿ™‚

I’ve felt too great over the last few weeks to really deviate (MAN! If only they could bottle the Whole 30 Tiger Blood feeling) so I plan to just get right back to it. Maybe not an official Whole 30, but I’ve just been making too much progress and feeling too bright eyed and bushy tailed to let much crap sneak back into the kitchen. We’ve got a lot going on in our personal lives these days, and my favorite gift to give myself is to make sure I’m eating in a way that will help support me mentally and physically.

We’re busting out the grill this weekend and probably going to go a little nuts. What’s cooking over there in your neck of the woods?

Permission To Not Be Proficient

Last year, after being in a new role at work for a few months I spent a week sitting in a conference room somewhere in the Midwest learning about Leadership. A few days into the event we embarked on a unit about development and the woman who was facilitating the course asked the crowd which skills are more important to develop — your strengths or your weaknesses.

My mind instantly went to my weaknesses: I’m not a good listener (I should work on that!), I can be a little bossy (add it to the list!), my enthusiasm for life can make me look a little bit spastic sometimes (tone it down a little!), my ability to adapt and be flexible can make me seem wishy-washy (this list is getting longer by the minute.)

Her response actually shocked me a little:

Master Your Strengths
Source

I had never looked at the strength/weakness dichotomy in quite that way, and somewhere in that discussion a light bulb went off: In work and in life we are not responsible for DOING everything that shows up on our plates, what we are responsible for is ensuring everything there GETS DONE. Simple, but profound. And man, does that philosophy make a difference.

As a goal-oriented person, my tendency is to want to push for proficiency in every possible area. If I can’t do something at CrossFit I want to work on it until I get better. I want to be a career woman, but also have a clean awesomely decorated house, throw great parties, eat healthy meals, keep my partner interested, stay in touch with my family, be a great friend, and own the cutest most well-behaved dog on a the planet who never gets sick and plays eager fetch with Spiderman toys all the time because that’s what he’d prefer. I do this in all parts of my life, frankly.

But I think I’m finally learning to let go of that a bit, and honestly, I feel a huge sense of relief.

It’s not perfect, but I’ve changed up a few things:

*I’ve outsourced the cleaning of my house (BEST DECISION OF MY ADULT LIFE) One of the companies I usually call is duct cleaning Melbourne.
*I’m still doing a weekly cook up, but a shorter one. Then cooking twice per week and making some simpler meals
*I’m working out in the mornings. Not because I love hearing my alarm go off at 4am, but because when I get home after work at 5 it means I have the energy to play with my dog or call friends or work on fun projects instead of crawling home from the gym at 6:30 and just dying to veg out on the couch.

It’s baby steps, but it’s also baby steps that have a domino effect. And one of the biggest dominoes falling is this idea of giving myself permission to not be “proficient” at everything. I know that sounds so silly, but honestly it’s been such a mental game changer (and guilt reducer!) I mean, listen I am NOT proficient at keeping dog hair off my floors okay and I own that. But it’s all good because I know someone who is proficient at that and *I* am super proficient and scheduling her to to come at regular intervals! Win-win!

So now I’m on the lookout for what to outsource next. LIBERATION, I tell you.

Watch out world!

This is not a gratuitous selfie, I promise. I’m going to talk about my hair in a minute: THIS IS EVIDENCE.

Since it’s been a few weeks, I thought we ought to get current!

I am currently:

Loving a new hair treatment: Roots by Lush. It defies gravity. Fine or flat haired ladies, CHECK IT OUT! I can literally skip washing my hair AND using styling products on second day hair when I use this — which is what it claims, but I was dubious. Considering my second day hair ALWAYS needs a wash unless I want to look like I fried bacon in my hair, I just can’t get over how ‘normal’ my hair looks in that picture and how I basically put on a hair mask and then let my hair dry. Plus: it’s minty, tingly awesome. That non-gratuitous selfie is my second day hair post “Roots” ing. I just seriously can’t believe it.

Cooking pretty exclusively from this stack of cookbooks on my kitchen counter

Drinking lots of water, sparkling water, kombucha, and some overpriced green hippie juice from Whole Foods instead of wine. I miss wine, but not drinking booze is so dang for weight loss.

Enjoying that (HEY-O!) my clothes are fitting again. Since I decided to really focus on my weight loss goals I’m down about 12 lbs. Trending downward is so much nicer than trending upward. ๐Ÿ™‚

Obsessing over Iced Coffee with coconut milk. For some reason coconut milk in hot coffee makes me want to gag, but in ICED Coffee? DIVINE!

On Digital Fatigue, Spring Breaks + What’s Next

cat
Source

I came across the phrase “Digital Fatigue” last week and I thought to myself — YES! THIS IS EXACTLY HOW I AM FEELING! Long story short: I’m not dead, depressed or pregnant — I’ve just been here enjoying myself but not writing about it.

It feels a little weird, actually. But good weird.

Mel makes a great analogy about life that I am going to borrow from in this moment because it’s so accurate: If I was the bad-ass main character in a movie right now this would be the peppy, musical montage where she is just “doing all the work.” You know what I’m saying?

Lately I have been just a little tired out of my computer/iphone/twitter/facebook/pinterest/instagram/tumblr/omg! I’ve updated things here and there, but for the most part I decided to take a little Spring Break of sorts. If you can believe it, this is the longest I have gone without updating this site since 2010!

It blows my mind a little, but I have to be honest: it has felt really good. I think I just needed to press the pause button on the internet. I LOVE the internet, but every once in a while my brain just gets a little bit overwhelmed by all the stimulus! Now don’t get any crazy ideas, I’m not planning on going anywhere, and in fact just yesterday I started feeling that familiar pull of wanting to jot down some thoughts here in this space. I’ve spent the last couple of weeks cooking, writing, reading, working out, creating, and also spending a lot of time just thinking. And for me, when all of those things are in abundance it just feels sort of natural to share.

So I’ll be getting back to this space shortly. (I MISS YOU GUYS! HOW ARE YOU? WHAT’S NEW?) But I think a little digital detox had been long overdue!

Cliffs not of the last few weeks: I am still enjoying my Whole 30 (I’m on Day 17, so it’s pretty much: TIGER BLOOD FOREVER!) I’ve also recommitted to my workout routine with a vengeance, organized some big things in my house and in my life, tried out some new recipes, had some new epiphanies, bought some new beauty products, read some neat things that I want to noodle on and talk about (I just said “neat.” OMG) and generally just recharged my battery. I’m sorry if any of you were worried (and thanks for the kind emails checking in) and I really appreciate the concern.

Let’s get back to our regular programming on Monday, shall we?

(No but seriously: WHAT’S NEW?)
