30 Days of Denim – Day Four

When I wear jeans and a t shirt, I generally feel a little bit sloppy. Maybe it is just the casualness of the phrase “Jeans + Tee” but I feel like I’m phoning it in. That said, on Friday (yes, I’m posting these a few days after I wear them) I really wanted to go casual — because it was ACTUALLY Casual Friday. Also, I wanted to shake things up since I was really sticking to jeans and a cardigan and it was time for a change.

A quick look to Pinterest for inspiration and I found this:

Embellished Tees! The casual shirt that makes you feel pulled together! Noted. I may seek out some more of these. Well, not exactly these, though I am most definitely fond of finding something I like and buying it in every color. You know what I’m saying here, right? There is a place in my life for embellished tees and that place is Casual. Damn. Friday.

Here’s what I came up with:

30 Days of Denim - Day Four

Tee: Banana Republic
Jeans: Gap Premium Bootcut (Not loving these jeans and at the end of the day I could fit a second person in them)
Belt: Target
Ring: Target
Sandals: Merona for Target

Obviously my hopes were that I would instantly look like a Victoria’s Secret model. Sadly this did not happen. But I was fairly happy with the results.

Garrett was happy because between shots he captured two of my fierce unintentional Blue Steel faces while I was waiting for him to tell me he was ready. I think he just likes to mess with me.

Sometimes the outtakes are even better than the real pictures.

30 Days of Denim – Day Three

No inspiration pic today — I fell in love with a hot pink cardigan at the Nordstrom Rack Summer Clearance and it had to be mine. I am the type of person who likes to enjoy the things I buy immediately, wheras Garrett gets something new and likes it to live in his closet for a few weeks before he even wears it. Boys make no sense to me sometimes.

So here is what I came up with:

P1030761.JPG

Cardigan: Halogen @ Nordstrom Rack
Tank: Merona for Target
Jeans: Old Navy “The Flirt” (whatever)
Belt: Target
Silver Cuff: Some Crappy Accessories Store
Shoes: Old Navy (I bought them kind of as a throw away once for $10 to get free shipping, but it has been a love affair ever since)

Garrett was quite the jokester while taking this picture. As a consequence in almost every shot I was right about to roll my eyes. Still uncomfortable posing for pictures in clothes. Hopefully I’ll get over that soon because 27 more days is a long time to be uncomfortable.

In the end I said “Take a detail of my tank top” (I love this tank top!) and he said “How am I supposed to do that without looking like your perv a boyfriend taking a gratuitous tit shot?” I think he ended up doing ok.

I’m OBVIOUSLY comfortable in jeans and a cardigan — we’re 3 for 3 on that. I think it’s time to start shaking it up a little!

30 Days of Denim – Day Two

So today, I took an even bigger style leap! I saw a picture that I just liked the silhouette of and took my style inspiration from that instead of copying it directly. Baby steps, people. Baby steps.

Here was the pin:

And then I laughed out loud hysterically at the irony of the source being a site called Petite Little Girl — 3 things I am most definitely NOT. But I liked the leopard, I liked the belt, and I am in LOVE with a high waisted pencil skirt (one of which I happen to have – IN DENIM!)

And here’s what I came up with:

P1030752

Similar, but different.  Pulled together but still casual.

Sweater: Merona for Target
Tank: Old Navy
Skirt: Gap Outlet
Wedges: Merona for Target
Belt: Target
Necklace: A gift from my Mama (and a favorite!)

I actually felt super comfy all day (Gap skirts rule!) and was glad to do something a little out of my comfort zone. Maybe tomorrow I will venture out of the “Target” section of my closet. Maybe not, you never know.

August Books

Well, I really didn’t read a lot this month but I guess that isn’t a surprise seeing as I called that back in January. I always read less in summer since I end up spend time outside grilling, clinking wine glasses with friends and soaking up the sun. It leaves a lot less time for inside activities.

Not to mention I worked out 17 times last month. And yes, I would like my gold star, please.

I finished 3 books and generally speaking all enjoyable. I’ve read 49 books of my 50 book goal this year, so at least I know next month I can do some celebrating no matter what!

Anyway, let’s talk about what I read:

Groundswell by Katie Lee
I was never really that interested in Katie Lee when she was married to Billy Joel, but when she started writing cookbooks and doing more lifestyle stuff in the media, I admit I thought she was pretty darling. Plus I’m always fascinated by people who actually live in The Hamptons year round — I mean, WHAT IS THAT LIFE LIKE??? Ina Garten: Adopt Me!

Anyway, I picked this up because I heard it was her first try at fiction and I’m always interested in the Quasi-Celeb Roman a clef. The plot line deals with a small town girl who marries big! But ultimately goes through a divorce with her Big! Hollywood! Celebrity! Husband. As such she takes herself on a post-divorce Stella-Gets-Her-Groove-Back trip to Mexico where she learns to surf…and maybe even love again. Cue sappy music.

The Pros: It definitely (and literally) is a good beachy read. Trashy Hollywood references, Yachts, Excess and Romance — important ingredients, yes?

The Cons: For a book billed as a post-divorce recovery story, a lot of real estate is given to the relationship. Like 2/3 of the book is about how she and her Hollywood Husband meet, fall in love, and live happily ever after for a while. The whole divorce, surfing and groove-getting takes place sort of hastily at the end of the book which was unexpected.

Overall it was light and fluffy and she’s an okay writer. There is not an ounce of complexity to the prose or the plot, but I think sometimes in a beach read you just want simple and satisfying, so in that sense it did its job. I’d probably pick up her next book, depending on the topic.

Book Number 2 was Stories I Only Tell My Friends by Rob Lowe. You guys know how I felt about that book already so we’ll just leave it at that.

Blood Bones and Butter: The Inadvertent Education of a Reluctant Chef by Gabrielle Hamilton was my third read and I have to say I had no idea who Gabrielle Hamilton was before I read this. I picked it up solely because the front cover quote was by Anthony Bourdain proclaiming it the Best! Food Memoir! EVAR! Or you know, something equally hyperbolic, and I love everything that comes out of that guy’s mouth, so I was intrigued.

Maybe you are hip and smart and you already knew all about her life and her East Village restaurant called Prune. I did not, but now that I have done some reading about it, it appears it has quite the cult following. Hamilton’s simple and soulful food is rooted in memories of her complicated upbringing and an interesting personal life that would probably even make for good fiction.

What was most compelling about this book for me, was voice and overall writing style. In her 20s, in the middle of her years in New York catering, Hamilton went off to Michigan and earned a Writing MFA — and it shows. She can turn a phrase and set a scene that in a very powerful way and I wanted to underline passages on every other page just because they instantly captured the marrow of life. Happy, sad or indifferent, this book travels through a life time of emotions and experiences. Although I savored it, it came to an end too quickly. And like the mark of a true good read, I was sad when it was over.

What did you read this month that you loved?

30 Days of Denim – Day One

Well I wasn’t kidding when I mentioned training wheels yesterday, because Day One’s outfit comes hot off the Pinterest presses.

Here was my inspiration:

Cute and casual but pulled together — this is the goal. It seems so easy when I type it out, why does it get so hard when I am staring at a sea of clothes getting ready for work in the morning? Thankfully I had some similar pieces in my own closet, and I could paint by dress by numbers quite easily. Phew!

Here is what I came up with:

P1030741

I even got a little crazy and picked out my own shoes, belt and jewelry. WATCH OUT!

I’m representing Target pretty hard core.

Cardigan: Mossimo for Target
Tee: Merona for Target
Jeans: Gap Slim Boyfriend Jeans
Sandals: Mossimo for Target (I LOVE these sandals!)
Necklace: Uh…Target duh!

So now you know my dirty little secret — I’m a Target-A-Holic. What can I say? I feel better now that this is out in the open. I have to admit I felt SUPER self-conscious posing in an outfit in my backyard but Garrett was sweet about it, directing and stuff — taking it VERY seriously, which I couldn’t help but giggle about. I think this will be fun in ways I can’t even contemplate yet.
