Saturday Snapshots

Thanks for all the input on my hair you all. I took the plunge and chopped most of it off.

photo
Saying goodbye to hair that goes below my shoulders

I really love it! But I don’t think this picture communicates how short it actually is. I was blowing it dry this morning and realized that the majority of the hair on the back of my head is about an inch long.
photo
One inch! OMG. Baby steps to super short hair, I tell ya. One of these days I’ll get there.  I’m not sure if it was a great time of year to cut off all of my hair because yesterday my neck was freezing! I guess this means I have complete license to buy myself a whole new scarf wardrobe, right?

It has been SO DANG COLD at night lately, but the payoff has been absolutely gorgeous skies. I know it is cliche to post pictures of the sky on instagram but I CAN’T STOP MYSELF. How beautiful is that?
photo

That’s my view when I’m washing dishes. You’d think the view would make me more interested in doing dishes, but you’d think wrong. :)

Apropos of absolutely nothing, can we talk about the major argument that’s been going on at our house lately? It is whether or not Buster should be allowed on the couch. He is SO TINY (30 lbs) that I think he should tooooootally be able to indulge in his lap dog fantasies, but Garrett feels like the dog should remain off the furniture. I started making fun of him and telling him that he was an old crotchety man, but then guess what I came home to the other day?

photo

SO BUSTED!

Garrett is such an undercover softy with a crotchety old man exterior. Now that we agree that the dog can be on the couch, Buster just hops up there whenever he sees fit.

The other day I snapped this pic because he looked like he was auditioning for doggie glamour shots with the very delicate head tilt against the couch.
photo
That doesn’t even look comfortable! But he stayed like that for almost an hour. Crazy dog!

Anyway, new hair, pretty skies and zany dog behavior. That’s about the pace of my life this weekend and you will hear no complaints! We’ve been laying low and catching up on Season 1 of Girls which is living up the hype so far. Are you watching it? Hope you are having a lovely Saturday!

Saturday Snapshots — Munchies Edition

We’ve been eating a lot of tasty treats since I hid the scale. Funny how that works, eh? :) Just kidding! I don’t even mean diving headfirst into the ice cream, I just mean I’ve been cooking again without weighing and measuring, and boy has my brain enjoyed it.

Here are some of the good eats you may have seen this week via Facebook, Twitter or Instagram (hollywouldifshecould):

Tuesday we did a little experiment in my house called “Will He Eat It: Salmon Edition.” You see, Garrett doesn’t really love cooked fish. He had a bad fish stick incident as a child and to this day cooked fish kind of skeeves him. But he loves sushi. So weird, right? So I’m always on the prowl trying to find cooked fish he will tolerate. Well guess what — he loves Salmon Burgers from Costco! Thanks for the suggestion, Internet. It was your brilliant minds that made me try them. I mixed up a mayo free version of this, plopped it on top and called it dinner.

Wednesday it was Sausage & Peppers!
photo
This is literally a 20 minute meal and I love to throw it together on nights that we go to the gym. We were supposed to have it for lunch on Wednesday, but I ended up skipping lunch that day and Garrett had to work, so we stole it for dinner instead of making a more Chicken Stir Fry. It’s just your fave sausage browned up nice and crispy, tossed with sauteed peppers and onions. Then cook up something green on the side (zucchini was our green of choice that night.) It comes together so quick it makes Rachael Ray’s head spin.

I worked out on Thursday morning at 5 am, took a quick shower and headed off to work only to realize I had forgotten my breakfast. Sad Friggin Panda, let me tell you. And then my phone buzzed and it was a text from my friend and workout buddy Cole who works in the building next door to mine:

And I came back to my desk with a couple of these babies and they were as good as they look!

photo

She doesn’t have a strict recipe, but lucky for you I know a gal who can hook you up with a good Paleo Blueberry Crumble Muffin Recipe.

Before I wrap this up, it’s Confession Time: I really need to stop buying string cheese because it is too damn easy going down. Hold me to it, would ya internet?

String Cheese: I wish I knew how to quit you....

It’s my favorite thing to have Post Workout — something about its saltiness is just PERFECT. Garrett’s favorite Post Workout Treat got a makeover this week too with the new Unsweetened Coconut Almond Milk I found at the grocery store.

photo

It was a nice switch up from just the Unsweetened Vanilla, and I highly recommend it! We’ve already purchased two more containers. That boy can really put down the protein shakes.

Anyway, that’s all the the fare I photographed this week. And wouldn’t you know it, now I’m hungry.

Saturday Snapshots: January Project Life Edition

This is not a scrap booking blog, and I do not pretend to be an expert in anything of the sort. But with my 2012 Goal to document more, I’m spending significantly more time take photos and figuring out what to do with them. I thought I’d share some of progress I have made on Project Life since that has been an integral part of the strategy. I’ll probably only check in about this once per month because I know scrapbooking is not everyone’s bag, but I am really enjoying the process and you know I like to talk about stuff I love, so let’s get started!

If you haven’t heard of it before, Project Life is a simple system that comes ready-made to allow you to document a period of time. You can keep it as fussy or simple as your heart desires — which is what REALLY appealed to me. Because my heart? Desires very little fuss, but I want a memory book of 2012!

Let’s Talk About What’s Been Great:

*The Materials

I purchased the Clementine Core Kit and Binder along with various designs of photo pocket pages and it really is a plug and play version of a scrapbook. If I wanted to embellish nothing at all, and just insert pictures I printed, it would turn out super nice looking. You have no idea how great this is for someone like me who doesn’t really think like a crafter.

*The Inspiration on the Web

Since I don’t think like a crafter, all of the people doing this and talking about it on the web and sharing tutorials has really helped me out! People share free printables all over, and talk about their process and I have found all of it infinitely valuable, even if I am not going to do the same things. My project will ultimately be pretty simple, since I do not have a lot of time to devote to it, but I still would like it to be an accurate depiction of our lives and to look pretty.

Sites that have helped me do that include:

Becky’s Blog (obviously)
Kelly Purkey
Amy Tangerine
Elise Blaha
Jamaica Makes
Marcy Penner
Plucky Momo
Nettio Designs
Jessica Sprague
The Mom Creative

There is also so much inspiration on Pinterest it is a little overwhelming. This is no surprise though, because that’s kind of Pinterest’s thing, right? OVERSTIMULATION! It’s why we love and hate it, yes? I created a Project Life Pinboard for some of the things that caught my eye, like free printables or pages that are organized well or tell a great story and it’s been fun to reference that for brainstorming my own pages.

Speaking of, here is the start of mine:

Some of the journal cards I’m keeping private because it mentions some professional-life related things and well…you know about blogging and talking about your job. So I’m just going to keep that to myself. But you get the idea, right?

Let’s Talk About What’s Been Challenging:

*Taking Pictures

First of all, I was going to try and not use any Instagram pictures in this and just have it all be pictures that I really thought about and took. But OMG…HA! After the first week, that left me with about 3 usable shots.

So A) I need to take more pictures, in general and
B) I ended up loving the silly Instagram pics I had taken because HELLO those are full of every day life. I think I will be so happy to be able to look back on those mundane little snapshots of our days and have those memories. So Instagram, you’re totally in!

*Telling A Story
So I’ve been printing my photos just about every week via a combination of Costco and PostalPix — I don’t have a photo printer so this has been so easy to do, even though I can see it getting kind of expensive. (I will probably come up with an alternative solution shortly.) But the hardest part for me has been taking those photos and telling a cohesive, visual story. I did not anticipate this problem at all! See, that shows you how green I am at this memory keeping stuff! I’m actually contemplating taking Ali Edwards’ Storyology class because apparently this stuff can be taught for the bargain price of $14. :)

*Getting Organized

I’m not sure if I will continue to organize this monthly, or by event, or by vignette (like the “books we’ve been reading” etc up above) but I will tell you this exercises a part of my creative brain that DOES NOT GET EXERCISED. And I kind of love that, even though it’s been a challenge. I think it will get easier as I get a better flow, but for now I’m just trucking along. Slowly.

*****

I have much more photos to include for this month, and I hope to get a chance to do that next week. Like I mentioned earlier, this isn’t a project I have a lot of time for — I’m not working on it every day — but I think what will be the key to making it an accurate reflection of our lives is to keep it up regularly and talk about the silly, small moments. Adding our grocery lists, talking about what we ate for dinner, journaling our dreams for the year. And if I can get it peppered with some personal snapshots too, all the better!

Project Life 2012 is underway! And I can’t wait to see how it ends.

Saturday Snapshots: Old, Tame and Tied Down Edition

This song is in heavy rotation on the radio stations around here and every time I hear it it makes me laugh. Mostly because Snoop Dogg is hilarious, as always, but also because it has brought me to the conclusion that Garrett and I are NO LONGER anywhere close to Young and Wild and Free.

Example: We were in bed by 9:30 last night. Yep, we GO HARD!

Anyway, I tell you all this because that fact that we enjoyed two cocktail laden meals out in the last 7 days is a big deal for us. Champagne for a going away party of a friend and then last night’s 911 Night Out after a major car alarm malfunction (you don’t even want to know) that rendered me completely unable to cook dinner.

I swear those onion rings and fish and chips were *TOTALLY* Paleo. (Dude, it was a loooooooooooong week that only a night out at the local pub could fix. I swear.)

Anyway, we did have some good Paleo meals this week but I don’t know that they don’t look so appetizing in pictures even though they were BOMB! (Related: I put this book on hold at the library, as I need MUCH HELP in that category. Fun!)

I’m telling you, there is nothing better than a pot of crusty, roasted brussels sprouts with bacon:
Crusty brussels sprouts + bacon

I also made a pot of Chocolate Chili this week that was about as delicious as it was nutritious!

photo

It sounds like a weird combo but it is simple and flavorful and totally makes sense in your mouth. The recipe can be found in the Well-Fed free download here.

It was a week for chili and roasted veggies and pints of dark beer FOR SURE. We finally got some rain around these parts and the weather definitely made me want to curl up with a blanket and a book far more than going out on the town. It was gorgeous and stormy looking almost every night and it looks like that should continue through next week.

photo

I did manage to drag myself to the gym 5 days this week though, despite the chilly weather, and I took my monthly fitness photo which is totally saving my sanity right now. I can clearly look at photos and see progress even though that bitch of a scale is well…being a bitch. I’m glad I’ve taken once a month photos and will continue to do so even though it sometimes feels like a lame exercise in vanity because the scale is such a sucky tool of measure. UGH!
photo

Speaking of an exercise in vanity, I got a haircut after 11 MONTHS! My hair was scraggly, yo! Man…so bad. But now…it’s better!

Anyway, that’s been my week so far (in photos.) I’ve been playing around with different photo apps on my iphone since I’m working on a fun little project that requires it:

Tell me…what is your favorite iPhone photo app?

Saturday Snapshots: Daily Edition

Thanks for all your fun iPhone app suggestions the other day. Gold mine, I tell you! This is why I love the internet — I can say, “Tell me something I don’t know” and BAM! Schooled. Also, for funny You Tube videos. The internet is always good for that!

Anyway, one of the things I have been loving about my new little toy is the ability to photograph the silly parts of my everyday life. The best camera is the one you are carrying, right? So even though I’m still in the “I take crappy cell phone pics” phase of documenting my life, it’s kind of fun to see what unravels. I think this will be helpful this year with Project Life and also, just for fun to look back on.

I thought I might occasionally share some of the dailies on the weekend as an exercise in improving my photography skills.

Here are some snaps from this week:

New Library Books

To Read.

So many books, yet so little time to read lately. It’s a bummer, but just the possibility in a stack of new books always puts a smile on my face.

My Favorite Shoes Lately

Saturday Sparkle

A little sparkle from Payless always improves the day right? Also, for some reason seeing it in a photograph makes me kind of love my kitchen floor. It’s funny how you can see something everyday and not really appreciate it until you see it “on film.”

Scribbles

Notes and scheming bring me lots of joy!

This is my editorial calendar for the blog, and also one (of the many) idea notebooks I keep around all the time. I know there are so many electronic ways to keep track of these things, and maybe I will get there someday, but for now — I just love the combo of ideas+paper+pens. It makes my heart happy!

Mid-Day Yum
A little mid day refresher, sans caffeine.

I don’t drink Coconut Water that often (mostly post workout and NEVER just the plain flavor, because: YUK) but it was warm this afternoon, I was super dehydrated and Passion Fruit is DELICIOUS! I have a case of these autoshipped from Amazon every month because it’s a cheap little good-for-me treat to have around on a gorgeous day.

Epiphany

Speaking of gorgeous days, this was on my last run of 2011 and in this moment I just felt so happy to be outside, running, enjoying the weather and feeling healthy. There are times when I hate that losing weight takes work. There are times when I wish I could lay on the couch and still be lean and fit. But then there are times when I am just so grateful for my ability work on my body and my fitness. Everyone doesn’t have that opportunity, so sometimes I need a reminder that it really is a gift.

*****

I took most of these photos using Instagram, which I’m actually enjoying much more then I thought. What do you know, it’s not just an app that lets you give your photos a retro feel, it’s actually a fun way to connect and share the little pieces of your life.
