Tuesday Bullets

Came home to an epic laundry fail.

*I was living on the edge yesterday with the amount of laundry I hung to dry on my guest bathroom shower curtain rod. Clearly I miscalculated. What a mess!

*I had to take a test for this nutritionist that I’m seeing that required me to consume only 24 oz of water in a day. EEP! Yesterday was that day and seriously, it was torture. I got up this morning and was like “I WILL DRINK ALL THE WATER I WANT JUST BECAUSE I CAN” and man, I’ve never felt so excited.

*Speaking of the nutritionist, we are embarking on a little experiment together (HOLD ME) — I’m quitting coffee again. When I type that sentence my brain just sees ALL OF THE SWEAR WORDS IN BIG BOLD LETTERS. So. Any decaf teas you want to tell me about? Because I have to replace my morning ritual with something or this will never work.

*My closet is annoying me. I’m not going to say I’m in a full on clothing funk, but my clothes are boring me and even pinterest isn’t seeming that inspiring. Maybe it’s the changing seasons but getting dressed is just feeling like a drag lately. Perhaps I just need to go out and shop for a whole new wardrobe. 😉

*With the three day weekend coming up Garrett + I really want to see a movie. I know, wild times! But remember, on weeknights we get really crazy and do things like juice and listen to music. Anyway, what have you seen in the theater lately that you just loved, anything? Any disappointments we need to stay away from?

*While not in a clothing funk I *am* in a reading funk. I can’t even tell you the last book I finished, how sad is that? Goodreads tells me it was Brandi Glanville’s book Drinking and Dating and that was all the way back in April. Man, that is EMBARRASSING!

*I did read some great advice about reading funks recently though: If you’re not reading at the moment, you’re just not reading the right stuff. I think this is so true. I think maybe I need to put down the literary fiction and either read something scary, angsty, or hot pink. Recommendations welcomed.

*What’s new with you this Tuesday?

I drank this one during my first Whole 30 and fell in love: Yogi Detox Tea. Found at your typical mainstream’d hippie stores (i.e. Whole Paycheck, Sprouts, etc.).

    • Holly says:

Added to my hippie store grocery list! I love the Yogi Decaf Green Tea Kombucha so I’ll definitely check these out! Thanks

  2. LizScott says:

You want to read The Storied Life of AJ Fikry. It is DELIGHTFUL.

Also, did you ever read Bread and Wine? Did you read it at my enthusiastic blubbering and then hate it? You can tell me. Our friendship can weather this rocky time.

    • Holly says:

Oooooh, I DID READ IT (Bread and Wine)! And I DID love it! I think I even read it AFTER Brandi Glanville — yesssssss, I feel so much less shame now! 😉 I guess I just didn’t update goodreads. I mean, if it’s not on goodreads did it even actually get read????

Added AJ to my library hold list. Thanks, lady!

  3. Kristabella says:

I couldn’t even get past the 24 ounces thing. Why? I think I drink that the minute I get up in the AM. THE WHOLE DAY????

So David’s Tea and Teavana have some great decaf teas. Check out the Herbal Tea Blends at Teavana. I like this one iced – http://www.teavana.com/the-teas/best-tea-blends/p/blueberry-kona-pop-tea-blend

    • Holly says:

I’m the same way — it was REALLY MENTALLY DIFFICULT. Like, I’ve done a lot of mentally tough things in my life, but watching Garrett chug a Lime La Croix with our dinner last night may be the hardest thing I’ve done to date. 🙂

Thanks for the Teavana rec, I just placed a big old order!

  4. Eeeeeek… I’ve definitely taken breaks from coffee but I always come crawling back! I think the yogi teas are all fabulous. Purchase a few boxes and never get bored 🙂

I have a few books on my list – rereading ISWF (because sometimes I forget lol), Orange is the New Black, Harry Potter, The Wolf of Wall Street, and more!

I’m feeling a similar way about my wardrobe… my friend is hosting a clothing swap so I’m pretty excited about that!

    • Holly says:

I’ve always crawled back too. I’m seriously scared about giving it up. UGH!!! Hoping I can create a new ritual that’s just as good.

  5. libbi says:

Guardians of the galaxy is wonderful, funny, and heartwarming. So awesome. I wandered through the yogi tea section at whole foods when I cut caffeine out. The chai rooibos are my preferred.

  6. sizzle says:

Guardians of the Galaxy is a really fun, well done movie. I really liked it!

My book club just read Americanah and it was really good. If you haven’t read any of Jonathan Tropper’s stuff, do! Especially “This is Where I Leave You” which is coming out as a film staring a bunch of awesome actors very soon.

I’m over all my clothes too.

    • Holly says:

Oooh, I’ve seen a lot of You Tube reviews of that book — it looks good! And I LOVE Jonathan Tropper. I’ve read most of his books except The Book of Joe. It’s just sitting on my bookshelf, I may need to dust it off because that’s exactly the kind of stuff I’m in the mood for!

  7. Chloe says:

Have you read any of Jen Lancaster’s books? They are such a fun and relaxing read, I highly recommend all of them! Also, I’m working my way through the Game of Thrones books and they are completely amazing. Highly recommend.

Also, the coffee thing? I’m giving it my all to drop it right now, and I’ve found that replacing them with some sort of tea latte (made with coconut milk) is really helping me with the transition!

    • Holly says:

I’ve read all of Jen Lancaster (love her) except Tao of Martha — just added it to my library queue…Thanks! And I think I’ll try the tea latte thing — maybe doing something special with tea that I don’t usually do with coffee will make it more fun. 🙂

  8. Tamara says:

Have you read The Name of the Star? It’s a YA Jack the Ripper in modern London novel. Quick, slightly scary and might be what the dr ordered.

  9. Jil says:

I am also quitting coffee…slowly weaning off of it this week using Half-Caff and Decaf. I love the Teavana teas. They are expensive, but I alternate them with some of the better options from Whole Foods. My favorite decaf from Teavana is called Spice of Life (I think it’s decaf anyway).

I finished Tell the Wolves I’m Home not too long ago and really enjoyed it. It was a quick read for me.

  10. Lc says:

The Rosie Project is my favorite book I’ve read all year. Highly recommend!

  11. Cathy says:

Have you tried the tea recipes on Marks Daily Apple? The turmeric tea is nice- weird but good.

  12. Nicole says:

Guardians of the Galaxy is so funny! Worth full price movie admission….

    I love David’s tea.

  13. Bree says:

I 3rd or 4th or whichever it is Guardians of the Galaxy! And I also 2nd Yogi’s Chai Rooibos tea. It’s delicious! Although I’m not sure if it’s caffeine free..

  14. Juliann says:

I love Bengal Spice (celestial seasonings) as a morning coffee replacement. It’s an herbal tea but it’s also spicy (think cinnamon & ginger & such) so it seems to give me the boost I need when I’m not drinking coffee.

I wish I had book recommendations but I’ve been so immersed in reading for work that I haven’t been reading for pleasure. But I am partway through Hyperbole & A Half and it’s giving me the laugh I need after reading way too many academic articles.

  15. Lisa says:

Quit coffee? Never. From my cold dead fingers… Seriously, I tried it once. I was on the floor 12 hours in holding my head begging for death – and I only have one cup a day. Addicted? You bet – but it’s my only vice. Good luck to you – seriously. As for decaf teas, I like Tazo Passion. Hot or cold.

Closet funk? I hear ya, sister. Want to go shopping?

  16. Linda says:

I am a decaf (organic, water processed) coffee drinker because I love the taste but I have given it up before and I find a strong peppermint tea is a good replacement when I miss the oomph taste of coffee. I use Traditional Medicinals Teas after reading this post by Food Babe: http://foodbabe.com/2013/08/21/do-you-know-whats-really-in-your-tea/
As for books if you like a bit of Brit comedy and don’t mind huge belly laughs check out Caitlin Mornan’s “How to be a Woman”
I feel your closet funk pain. I hate everything. Why oh why can’t I just wear pajamas to work?

    • Holly says:

Thanks for the suggestions (and the link too! That was a really interesting post, and I’ve never read Food Babe.)

  17. Maureen says:

YIKES! Give up coffee? That would be tough, and I only drink one cup a day. Good luck!

I haven’t seen it yet, but Boyhood is supposed to be amazing. My 20 yr old daughter also loved Guardians of the Galaxy-I am dying to see that because I have loved Chris Pratt since he was Bright Abbott on Everwood :)Hopefully this week!

I just finished Big Little Lies by Liane Moriaty-and it was SO GOOD! It has been a long time since I have fallen into a book like that-where I simply couldn’t put it down. Now I am re-reading Outlander, since I am watching the Starz series.

I love reading all the recommendations-I am writing down the books and heading over to the library website to try and put them on hold!

    • Holly says:

Believe me, I am doing it kicking and screaming. Such a bummer, but I’m going to give it a go. I loved Liane Moriarty’s book The Husband’s Secret so I definitely want to pick up Big Little Lies. I just added it to my hold list at the library and I’m like number 200 — must be pretty good 😉

  18. april says:

I drink so little coffee these days that I had a double dirty chai this morning (two shots of espresso) and seven hours later I’m still a little jittery.

  19. Suzy says:

Guardians of the Galaxy! So funny, full of heart, and plenty of action. I was surprised at how much I liked it and how good it was.

  20. Linda says:

I’d highly recommend “Where’d You Go, Bernadette?”, but I also want to to read “Small Blessings” since I read the recommendation in Real Simple.

    Happy reading!

  21. sarah says:

Dandy Blend is a great coffee substitute!

  22. I’m gonna go ahead and add my vote to Guardians of the Galaxy. But, if you can still find it in a theater near you, I HIGHLY recommend the movie Chef. Food porn galore, an all-star cast, and overall lighthearted and heart-warming movie.

As for the coffee, I dunno if you follow Megan at Detoxinista’s blog, but I remember she posted this a while back: http://detoxinista.com/2014/01/maple-iced-latte/. I haven’t tried it, because I’m not actually a coffee drinker, but I always thought it sounded interesting, and it sounds right up your alley right now!

  23. Lyndsy says:

Guardians of the Galaxy all the way. It was amazing.

  24. Meg says:

I have LOTS of book recommendations! I hit the book jackpot at the library recently and of course they were all new releases that you can only borrow for two weeks. Send me a bill! I’m not taking these back till I’m done!
-Landline by Rainbow Rowell (Eleanor and Park and Fangirl are also great!)
    – The Storied Life of AJ Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin (So, so lovely! One of my favorites this year.)
    – I second the recommendation of The Rosie Project
    – My Accidental Jihad by Krista Bremer (memoir, very interesting, not what you’d think)
    – The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd (I feel like I’m the last on the bandwagon for this book, but it’s sucked me in and I can’t put it down.)

As for movies, I haven’t seen anything good in a while, but I did see Chef and Obvious Child a few months ago and enjoyed them both!

  25. Meg says:

Oh – and one more book! All Fall Down by Jennifer Weiner

  26. Sara says:

Do not, I repeat DO NOT see Lucy. It is the worst movie I have ever seen. My fiance and I now say after a bad movie “Well, it was still better than Lucy.”

  27. Allison B says:

Guardians was great, but I LOVED “The Hundred Foot Journey”. Indian food, French food, young love and Helen Mirren! It’s just a wonderful story and so much great food! You will heart it, I’m sure 🙂

  28. Alice says:

If you liked the Kit Runner, you will love this: and the mountains echoed by khaled hosseini

  29. Scrolling through the comments on this blog post is fun 🙂 So many tea and book recommendations.
God speed and good luck with the coffee thing. I used to tell myself I didn’t have a problem, since I only drank one cup in the morning Monday – Friday. But ever since starting this new job back in March, that has me getting up at 5am, I feel like I need coffee to function. Jake is the big tea drinking. We have a small locally owned tea place near our apartment that sells loose leaf. If you don’t already own one, buying an electric kettle that allows you to heat water to a certain temperature is life changing. Also the perfect tea maker from teavana is only about $20 and makes brewing loose leaf a lot easier.
As for movies, we just saw Snow Piercer. So disappointing. It had potential but didn’t bother creating a cohesive story. Chef was cute. It’s predictable but it’s a cute feel good movie.

  30. Rae says:

    Yogi Vanilla Hazelnut. The best.

Good luck coffee-free. Caffeine-free life (including coffee bc decaf is still caffeine) is one of the great liberation a of my life. Took t-i-m-e and serious motivation. But once done it feels great and my body thanks me all the time. Even when, rarely, I’m thinking oh boy could I use some caffeine right now just once, I’m equally feeling so glad that I know this too will pass and I’ll be continuingly glad and proud I let my body stay clean (because for my body, this is key).

  31. KellyBrown says:

Barnes and Noble carries the Harney & Sons organic tea line from London. They have a decaf pumpkin spice tea that’s a roobios AND my favorite called African Autumn. Also a roobios, with a floral bouquet and hint of clove. Both are excellent and at $10.95 for 30 bags, good deal!
