Wednesday Bullets

Sunshine // Rain #nofilter
Is it sunny? Is it rainy? The weather last night was having a tough time making a decision.

It’s been another one of those weeks where it’s already Wednesday and I’m like, “Oh, right. I have a blog.” 🙂 If it’s any indication, I spent about 5 minutes on Tuesday morning going at my eyes with eye makeup remover to try and get all the mascara off before I realized that I wasn’t even wearing makeup. WHOOPS — JUST DARK CIRCLES. So all I have in me today is bullets, but I have some very important questions for you — so can we chat?

Ok, here we go:

*Speaking of mascara, I need a makeup intervention. Here’s the deal: I have been wearing Bare Minerals foundation, oh for basically as long as I’ve been alive. Ok, maybe not that long but at least 10 years? And all of a sudden about a year and a half ago I started to feel like my normal color just wasn’t matching my skin. (And for the record, I wear a different color in summer and winter. Don’t worry I’m not a crazy person who gets a tan and then is like “Why doesn’t my foundation look right?”) Anyway — so over the last year I have spent a small fortune trying to find The Right Color — even going in multiple times and having the Very Makeup-y Sales People put makeup on me — and it appears that The Right Color just doesn’t exist anymore. “Just blend two colors” the sales girls always say, as if I have time, money or desire to be my own beauty apothecary. I DO NOT! But I very much enjoy the texture and coverage of mineral makeup and have zero desire to go back to the god awful Mac Studio Fix shit I used years ago, and liquid foundation just ain’t my bag. HAAAAAAAAAAAAAALP! What do I do? What do you do? Or have liquid/Stuido Fix options improved in the last 10 years. What do you use on your face? Ready, go!

*Part of the reason I woke up with bags under my eyes on Tuesday was because we had our Book Club meeting on Monday night and OHMYGOD IT WAS SO FUN! First, it involved discussing our chosen book, Julia Child’s My Life In France — and you guys, I just loooooooooooooooooooved that book! It was about two things I had really only mildly been interested in up until that point: Julia Child and France, uh obviously. 🙂 But it was so delightfully charming, she was so inspiring to read about, the entire book made me hungry and want to drink bottles and bottles of wine, and I was ready to get on the first plane to Paris. (So yeah, HIGHLY RECOMMEND, anyway.) But what was so fun was our fabulous themed dinner — Pate, Brie, French 75s, Beef Bourguignon, Green Salads and the most delectable little Orange Cardamom Madelines. And if you think we ignored the wine, well you thought wrong. So yeah, Tuesday morning? A bit rough. But totally worth it!

*So I finally got my Fit Bit One and it’s pretty rad. I hear if you have one we can like…be friends. HOW DOES ONE DO THAT? What do we, uh…do when we are friends? Do we like high five and look at each other’s steps. Tell me more about this! 🙂 I wore mine yesterday and had what felt like a completely sedentary day (I didn’t take a walk at work, etc) and still managed to get in about 7000 steps. I felt like that was pretty eye opening. Unfortunately I didn’t set it correctly when I slept last night because it didn’t track any data which made me sad. My two big reasons for wanting one was to track the restfulness of my sleep as well as to motivate me to get up and move around more at work. I CAN’T WAIT FOR GRAPHS AND CHARTS YOU GUYS!!! (And friends, maybe? I don’t know. Still need help with that. Here is my profile — does that help? It’s a bit, uh, sparse.)

*The only problem with walking today is that my legs no longer work after 3 crazy CrossFit workouts this wee. OUCH! 🙂

Kind of in love with my new Zebra Workout Pants! #QuadzillaPride

*These zebra-ish pants from Old Navy are basically my favorite things ever right now and if you have Quadzilla Pride, I think you should own them. They are highly flattering in a way that most “Printed Pants On Ladies With Large Thighs” are not. So, take that for what it’s worth. 🙂

*I loved this Huffington Post piece about 3 Reasons to Get Upset About CrossFit. I know I could have saved it for Friday links, but it’s Hump Day and I think we could all use a little more awesome in our lives to get us through the week, right?

****

Ok, that’s all I got peeps. What’s new in your neck of the woods. Tell me a good story, would ya? I am tiiiiiiiiiiiiired. I got up early to squeeze in my workout this morning so that tonight my only responsibilities would be to catch up on bad reality television. WIN!!!

I bought the fitbit flex on Sunday and haven’t been able to get the sleep function to work. I tried to click on the link to be your friend and it didn’t work. Hopefully someone has some suggestions on the sleep function…

    Love your blog!

I know…me too! I’m going to try it again tonight. I probably did something wrong — I was half asleep as it was!

      • Sarah says:

I am going to research tonight. I synced my fitbit and it said I woke up at 3:03pm. Uh no. Will let you know if I find out anything.

        • Sarah says:

Using Fitbit’s phone app, select more, then sleep. Hit the plus button and a menu will appear which gives you the option to begin sleep now. That will start your sleep without having to tap the bracelet or unit. Then when you wake up you can use the app to stop sleep.

I wear minimal makeup, but love Benefits Dr Feelgood for a primer. I love the way it makes my skin feel so will wear it alone on days when I just don’t care. This summer I’ve been using Stila BB Cream (spf 30) and have been very pleased with it.

I adored that book. Doesn’t it make you feel like you should be able to create gourmet meals with just a single burner?

    • Holly says:

Oh I love Benefit products. I’ll have to check that out. Don’t have to twist my arm to try something new. Thanks! 🙂

Try Jane Iredale! She has great mineral makeup products. I was a big BareMinerals user and then switched to Jane – won’t go back now!

  4. I loved that article. I think CrossFit and Paleo can both come off semi cultish but I think people just get so excited about it that they want to tell the world. I’ve dialed back my sharing, but sometimes it’s just so hard not to say something when you know how much the person could benefit from it.

Love your book club theme night… I’m hosting a little brunch on Saturday (before I go wedding dress shopping!!!!)that I’m excited about. Mimosas are my fave 😉

-I wear Bare Minerals and I mix 2 colors (light and fairly light) works great. I just sprinkle a little of one into the lid and then add the other color into that same lid each application. Might not be what you want to hear, but I cannot go back to liquid makeup either! Also, moisturizer wise, I use Yes to Cucumbers SPF30 and mix it with Physicians Formula tinted moisturizer in light.

-FitBit, do share because I have been eyeing one for a VERY long time and am intrigued…

I started using CARENminerals within the past few months. They have a BB-Multi Beauty Balm that I use as a cream/liquid foundation to even things out, then follow up with a dusting of their CARENminerals Foundation (loose powder). Recommended by Liz Wolfe (cavegirleats.com) who wrote the Skintervention Guide. Found reasonable prices for CARENminerals on Amazon.com.

OMG – Mary Kay! I know it sounds crazy, but they make a mineral powder foundation that practically disappears on your skin but yet evens out your skin tone (and makes those dark circles go away!). MK isn’t for your grandma anymore. I’ve become obsessed! The best part, you wont pay a fortune.

I love Alima mineral makeup.. It’s got no crap in it, just minerals. And they have a bajillion colors & you can order a sample for like a dollar(which is enough to do your face a few times) I highly highly recommend them. They’re the only brand that doesn’t make me breakout or contribute to my blackheads 🙂

I’m not sure if you’ll find this helpful or not, but just in case: I gave up makeup except maybe lipstick if I’m feeling dressy. My skin and face are what they are–thyroid dark circles and all–and it’s been the most liberating (time saving!) thing I’ve ever done.
Some days it’s tough realizing this is what I look like (wow, really???) but I’m rarely tempted to pull out the old foundation and concealer.

I just got a Fitbit too! I have the Fitbit One, is that what you have again? We should so be friends 🙂 I think you can search for people when you go to your Dashboard on the fitbit website. There should be a box called ‘Friends’ and in the box there should be a tab to search for friends. You can search by facebook or by email. My email is Mandalynnhoffman@gmail.com if you want to friend me. As for the sleep, I think every fitbit is different but if you have the One.. just hold the button down for about 2 seconds.. a timer or stop watch looking thing will start and that’s when you know you’re in sleep mode. When you wake up, you just hold down the little button again and it will stop the ‘stop watch’.
So far I love it, i also sync mine up with Myfitnesspal and my NikePLus.

Great job on your steps! That’s my biggest trouble.. i need to walk more around work. 🙂

Just tried a great new natural makeup brand called Vapour Organic Beauty – check them out. Amazing texture! Unlike any other natural brand I have tried.

  12. Lynn says:

You could try a BB Cream in whatever shade is closest to you. It’s supposed to match to your face color. I like Two Faced Tinted Beauty Balm Cream Glow. 🙂

    Hi Holly,

These pants look great on you – I’m inspired to try them. Can I ask though (as I can’t find the info on the website) – do these have any sort of drawstring on them? I find a drawstring helps secure things when it comes to jumping movements…

  14. Hanna says:

You can get the fitbit data for sleep even if you forget to start the timer – just go to Log and enter the time you turned off the lights and the time you woke up. Fitbit will show you what happened in between.

  15. Erin says:

I had the same problem with Bare Minerals foundation, and also didn’t like the ingredients list so much. Then I found Mineral Fusion — which is cheaper and cleaner — and from it I found my perfect color. Check them out!

  16. Michelle says:

I like both Alima and Jane Iredale. You can order a bunch of samples from Alima to try out, and when I was trying to find my color in Jane Iredale, I called the company and they sent me five samples. JI is more expensive, but I think it’s worth it. Alima is cheaper than Bare Minerals and pretty darn good.
