Lazy Sunday

We are having quite the lazy Sunday around here and I am super happy about it. No rushing, no schedules, no plans — just whatever we feel like at our own pace. It has been a long weekend so far and I’m so relieved to just be sitting at my dining table with a pup at my feet, the sounds of football in the background and delicious smells wafting through the kitchen.

We had a long week with Honey Boo Boo Dog (yep, no name has stuck yet) who hadn’t really been sleeping through the night. At first we thought it was just new surroundings, or maybe he was older and just needed a nightly trip outside, but on Thursday he was up just about every hour vigorously shaking his head, so we knew something was up with his ears. The vet couldn’t get us in until Saturday, so I worked from home on Friday to make sure that he was doing okay. As the day went on though it just got SO MUCH WORSE. He couldn’t go more than a few minutes without shaking, was clearly upset and in discomfort, so we called the vet and explained and they kindly squeezed us in.

He was a dream at the vet and made friends with every person in that office. I’m glad he is so easily social with other people and dogs, it is such a relief. We found out that he is most likely an Australian Shepherd/Terrier/Retriever mix and is about 4 years old. He’s in relatively good health and we made appointments for all of his vaccinations and to chip him and to have a heart worm test. Friday though, we just wanted to figure out what was going on with his ears and unfortunately HBB has two severe ear infections probably brought on by his allergies. 🙁 Poor guy.

His ears are full of gunk and inflamed, so we came home with some ear wash and antibiotics/antifungal creams, plus instructions on how to sneak allergy meds into his treat. We started the regimen immediately and he is SO MUCH HAPPIER. And so are we now that we know he is okay and on the mend, and of course now that everyone is sleeping comfortably through the night! We had to stop at Target on the way home from the vet and I snapped this picture while we there because it was so hysterical. I posted it on Instagram too, but it’s so funny I have to share it twice. Garrett is clearly Target’s target demographic.

Saturday Garrett had to work and because parking can be nutty downtown I dropped him off and picked him up and did my grocery shopping in between. I had made a super epic grocery list though and left it on my freaking kitchen table instead of taking it with me. Don’t you HATE when that happens? When I was done I stopped at home and got the dog so we could explore the neighborhood where G works on a leash and so Garrett’s coworkers could meet HBB. On the way home G wanted to sit in the back, so the two boys hung back there and even though I felt like kind of an ass driving Miss Daisy and Honey Boo Boo around, it was kind of cute.

This weekends eats were relatively clean, but there was also this:

Yep, that’s wine in a bag (2 bottles, actually) with its own dispenser. It’s from a local winery that we like, but what I like even more is its silly name: Chateaux Meau Faux. It is seriously the perfect BBQ wine. So convenient and delicious!

Our gym was having a BBQ on Saturday and we weren’t planning to go because we had made plans and then had to cancel because of the HBB situation and our vet appointment, but in the end since we had gone to the vet Friday and it was happening basically a block away from our house we ended up stopping by for bit and I’m glad we did. We had to cancel plans with friends this weekend because of Garrett’s work schedule and with our sick little doggie sitch (hello precursor to parenthood) and I was feeling sort of sad that we were going to have a crappy weekend, so it ended up being nice to just get out for a bit and say hi to some folks we like.

We slept in this morning (THANK GOD BECAUSE I WAS SO CRANKY AND SLEEP DEPRIVED FROM THE WEEK) and I’ve been lazing about ever since. photo

I did some food prep stuff for the week that included making a batch of Citrus Carnitas, some Paleo Raspberry Almond Muffins, grilling up some BBQ 3000 Chicken Thighs (a fave right now), and experimenting with a big batch of Bone Broth (more on that this week.)

The fridge is pretty stocked and I’d say the only thing that could make this day better is if it actually felt like fall, but unfortunately I’m writing with the A/C on full blast because it’s 93 degrees out. Oh well, you can’t win them all. I’m supposed to squeeze in a 4 mile run today but I’m sort of feeling like that’s not going to happen. I’ve got a few hours of light left though, so we’ll see.

Back to the grind tomorrow!

    Hi Holly-

I’m loving the blog! I’ve been reading daily for the last… month or so. I really love your writing style and humour. Also, weirdly, I keep wanting to tell my partner what you’re up to. “Holly and Garrett just got a dog…” I keep having to stop myself telling her your big news! 🙂

I figured out that I do have advice re: dog. GET VET INSURANCE. We waited a bit long to get ours, and Jasper (our German Shorthaired Pointer) kept pulling ligaments and and getting things in his ears, so now we’re really limited as to what is covered now (though our policy apparently roles over every year- so we’re hoping since we’ve been really careful with him he’ll now be covered!). Dogs get so expensive as they get older, and what dog owner is going to say “poor sparky needs a new knee, he’s really suffering, but crap it’s $5000, guess we’ll have to put him to sleep.” No one I know!

Thanks again for your contribution to the interwebz!

Garrett is a-DOR-able. I love his expressions when it’s clear you’re making him let you take a picture.

I know your oven is such an “awesome” color, but does it have *SIX* burners? If so, I am officially jealous. 😉

    Happy weekend!

It doesn’t. It only has 4, but only 3 work. The rest is just random space. AND IT’S UGLY. But in the future, my dream kitchen will have six burners DAMMIT!

      • bethanyrx says:

WOMP. I have one of those… and it was one of the big burners! I think I finally figured out the trick–don’t turn it up all the way to high, and *most* of the time it works. 😉 Maybe I need to do a little arm-twisting to have Mr. Jensen install the Jenn-Air 4-burner gas rangetop + GRIDDLE that’s collecting dust in the basement.

OH, WAIT. Have to demo the kitchen first. That’s why I love remodel projects. 😉

Will you guys move in with us? Pretty please. It can be like Sister Wives but less creepy. Because we can’t even PAINT!

          • bethanyrx says:

Dude. I would be all over that in a hot second. 😉

And we have *TWO* professional paint sprayer machines (one for big areas, one for detail work, natch), so your house would be painted in no time flat.

Yep, we would be pretty awesome roommates… and the guys would have to love it because they would be eating like kings!

            xoxo

I keep going back to look at that Target picture and cracking up. I love it.

I hope Honey Boo Boo is feeling better! My dog has severe environmental allergies (he’s on shots & the whole 9 yards) and it’s such a helpless feeling when they’re sick 🙁

I died at that Target picture! I think Garrett should ask for royalties.

Things are looking up for HBB. He doesn’t love the medicine but it seems to be working. It kills me to have put it in his ears because he hates it — I do not know what we will do with kids! Ay yay yay!

  5. That sounds like a fabulous Sunday… and that’s mostly because I did something similar. Breakfast at the 24 Diner here in Austin with the fabulous Kathleen and Jeremy (http://jeremyandkathleen.blogspot.com/ ), followed by reading, half-napping, watching football, and thinking about (not actually making) food for the week. I even treated myself to takeout coconut curry for dinner so I wouldn’t have to cook. Heavenly. My only complaint: it was time for bed far too soon!

    • Holly says:

I HEART Kathleen! (Well, you know her blog. Not to be creepy like I actually know her. ha!) Sometimes we all need a little takeout in our life. 🙂

  6. Rena says:

Why not just call him ‘HBB? It seems to be his name and if you use it as the abbreviation it ends with a vowel and that is even easier to recognize for most dogs….

I was thinking along the same lines. It rather seems like you HAVE a name, now you need a nickname. 😉 You could shorten Honey Boo Boo to Honeybee?
