Winter Style Challenge – Day One // Layers

Hooray! Ten days of inspirational style prompts. God knows I need some! Check out Kayla’s post explaining the challenge here if you would like to play along.

******

Today’s challenge was: Layers.

Can I just tell you I am not that fond of layering. Sure, I like it in theory. It always looks pulled together on others. But you see as someone who grew up being not supermodel thin, and with the shoulders of a defensive lineman, I am hard wired to layer as little as possible. Keep the bulk down! You know? But since I’ve dropped some lbs, and since it is super cold and rainy around Sacramento today, it was not a bad day to have to experiment. So experiment I did.

Here’s what I came up with:

Winter Style Challenge

Coat: Gap Outlet
Striped Sweater: Gap Outlet
Chambray Shirt: Gap
Pants: Merona for Target
Boots: These bad boys! (So awesome if you have enormous calves, like me!)

I have to say, I felt uncomfortable in this outfit. To me, the thing about layers is that they are shifty and I feel like I’m always pulling at myself. But I think it looked better than it felt, so maybe I will try again with a different combo.

I want this challenge to help me step out of my comfort zone a little bit so I’m looking forward to playing along, even if it does make me feel out of my element.

Are you naturally good at layering? What is the secret?

Cute! It looks great, you would never know that you felt otherwise!

  2. Elsha says:

That is a great outfit! Theoretically I’m good at layering. At least, I do it all the time. Growing up in Colorado means you learn to layer at a young age, because you never know how many of those layers you’ll need.

  3. Mary Hone says:

I think that looks great. Very very cute. Love the boots!!

  4. Christy says:

    I think you look great.

I am terrible at layering. I am the same, I love it on other people, but feel like I just can’t pull the same things off.

  5. I would like to think that four years in San Francisco made me a pro in layering. In fact, a dress, tights, boots, then a cardigan + a winter coat (11 months out of the year, ha) was my staple uniform.

  6. i’m with kristin on this one – growing up in the east bay you need to layer every day.

one of my secrets is to layer knits. cami, shirt, thin sweater, cardigan, jacket. cami, dress, cardigan, leggings, boot socks, boots.

when i layer cotton button ups they shift and drive me insane too. sometimes i buy them too small (who am i kidding? i swap them too small – check out it’s all yoga’s next swap) and later with a cami while leaving the shirt open until under the bust and put a cardigan over.

I love your white coat, it is fabulous!

  8. Oooh, I didn’t notice the collared shirt under the sweater when I looked at this on Flickr. Me likey!

I have no advice for layers. I’m not very good at layering things that aren’t fitted. Example: Today I layered a tank (slash bra, shhhhh) with a t-shirt and a cardigan. I basically do that every day. But it never even occurs to me to layer bulkier or flowier pieces. “Pieces.” I am so chic.

Anyway! I guess that’s part of this challenge, huh? Maybe I’m not cut out for fashion blogging 😉

  9. Megan W says:

You look great! I too LOVE the white coat! I would get it soooo dirty. My layering consists of tank/cami, shirt, and cardigan. I love the way jackets make people look so pulled together but I can’t get out of the comfort of a cardi. Can’t wait to see your other outfits!

  10. Great layering! I love your white jacket!

    See Me Rwar

  11. Kayla says:

I think you look absolutely fantastic. Pulled together and stylish and so pretty!
